bears are really common up in Vancouver - I mean really common.
In the suburbs, people catch them in their backyards all the time. I've had to deal with a Momma and Baby Bear crashing in the middle of a par 3 on a local golf course ("umm, fellas - that's a gimme.")
The problem isn't the bears, it's the fact that we've put subdivisions right in the middle of their foraging/hunting grounds.
Black and brown bears are only really dangerous if you spook them or get between one and it's cub. Grizzlies - well, if it decides to make an example out of you, you're pretty much fucked - they can run at least 30 miles an hour and can climb trees too.
