I'm seriously considering buying the Apple iPhone for no other reason than I'm a guy and I like gadgets. What's the early word on the street? Anyone? James, you're always current with new tech stuff any opinion either way?

Unless I'm wrong it's tied to AT&T (Cingular) service.
Whether you like that service would then have to be part of the decision making as well ...

my obvious concern is if you want to use it for web/audio/video which is kinda the point of the thing, i can forsee having to plug the fucker back in to charge it every 2 hours. apple's numbers for battery life are about twice what you're going to really see using it like a normal person doing some stuff.
cool hardware though.

Battery life issues, good point. It looks so kick ass it's going to be difficult saying no. Damn those marketing campaigns with their shiny toys.

Really, it's just a hipsturd waste of money for douchebags to pretend they have a small piece of luxury and tech savvy. I like gadgets more than most chicks, but lest we forget it's a $700 PHONE. Are you really going to use the iPod part that much? And the video screen- please stop with the youtube nonsense. Just stop. Yes, all this is coming from a girl who's addicted to the internet function on her phone.

the cool part is it is based off this technology http://www.popularmechanics.com/technology/industry/4217348.htmldownside? its a first generation device lacking some significant features like multimedia messaging (i.e. no video or picture messages), maybe wait till second gen to buy, but it does look cool and they are adressing the battery issues right up until launch, as of last week they revised it to 8 hours of talk, 7 hours of video, 6 hours of web browsing and 24 hours of music and 250 hours of standby. id get if it you can wait in line, and you have bingular wireless.

I'm on my third windows based smartphone. I'd look at one of them on the carrier of your choice before I'd jump on this thing. All of mine sported windows media player, can check unlimited email accounts, text message and ran excel, word and powerpoint. My Samsung even functions as a universal remote control- that's the best bar trick ever.
Remember...Apple told the first iPod owners who asked for battery replacements to buy new devices.

I'd like one, but I would wait until at least the 3rd or 4th generation of the product before I actually considered buying one. Like all new technology, there will be kinks to be ironed out, so let someone else fund Apple's R&D until they get it right, by which time either a) the price will have come down at least once or b) they will have released a smaller and cheaper entry-level version or a vastly ugraded version of the original.
Like the original iPod, in the first few months of release the iPhone will be a guaranteed mugger-magnet too. Moreso because people who often buy expensive new gadgets first also make a big deal of showing them off in public as well.
So wait for the smaller, sleeker, and better version 6-12 months down the line would be my approach.

Have you heard of Ultra Mobile PC's? I was thinking of carrying this instead of a laptop. I found it difficult to find a cell phone that works everywhere so I was planning on using Skype on it.

I don't know how Cingular is on the westcoast, but it sucks a bag of dicks in NY/NJ. If the phone part don't work, its a waste. I had a Windows Mobile Smartphone which was OK, but needed a charge every 5 hours. I'm now on the blackberry Pearl which does all I need and I keep a Mini for when I want music. Nothing compares to blackberry for the email functionality.
BTW- does every whore have a sidekick or is my imagination.

I'd love to get one of these but will not touch that service even if they gave me the phone. They screwed the hell out of one of my friends - they're trying to collect like $2000 from him for somebody else's account - everytime they say that they have it straightened out they go back to billing him.

At long last the final shoe on iPhone has dropped: The cost of voice and data plans that you'll have to buy from AT&T when you purchase the device. The good news: It's not as bad as some had feared. The bad news: It's still going to cost you a pretty penny if you're used to paying $40 a month for a basic service plan. Here's the damage: $60 a month for 450 minutes. $80 for 900 minutes. $100 for 1350 minutes. If you need even more minutes, plans continue to climb up to $220 a month for a whopping 6000 minutes. The good news: All plans include unlimited email and web, rollover minutes, unlimited mobile-to-mobile, and 200 text messages a month. All except the cheapest plan include unlimited nights and weekends minutes; the cheapest plan includes a mere 5000 of those. Contrary to earlier rumors there is no voice-only option for the iPhone: Remember you need data service to do all the cool email/web/mapping business that makes iPhone an iPhone, otherwise you've pretty much got a pretty brick in your pocket that can play Avril Lavigne tunes. Additional details are here. Is this a good deal? Let's compare. AT&T's cheapest voice-only plan costs $40 a month for 450 minutes, 5000 nights and weekend minutes, and no data services at all. (Even text messages are about 15 cents a pop.) Adding $20 a month for unlimited web isn't a bad deal. For the $60 of the iPhone's cheapest plan, you can get AT&T's 900-minute plan with no data service. Looking at it another way, AT&T's Messaging Unlimited plan (unlimited MMS/SMS messages) costs $20 a month extra. Its unlimited messaging and media plan (which gives you access to cellular video as well) costs another $40 a month. The company has a variety of data plans for web browsing phones. The closest to what the iPhone gets you is SmartPhone Max, at $30 extra per month. Whew, that's a lot of numbers. Putting it all together, designing a comparable plan to iPhone's $60 service on AT&T with a non-iPhone device would actually cost about $70 a month. Believe it or not, iPhone service is actually a bargain! On the other hand, $60 a month or more isn't cheap. Over the life of the phone that equates to $1,440. Add in the price of the phone and activation fees and the cheapest amount you'll spend on an iPhone over the next two years is $1,975. You can almost buy a brand new MacBook Pro for that outlay. And don't forget the cancellation fee you'll pay on your old phone... Overall I'm pleased. AT&T could have gouged consumers with a $100/month plan and few people would have flinched. Instead the company is offering an affordable option that should help to ease the sting of that initial $500 or $600 outlay. That said, I'm sure many will still find the plan too expensive. As always, I await your thoughts, opinions, and rants on the topic. LINK

As reported in AVN: LOS ANGELES - Digital Playground announced today that it will bring the first adult content to Apple's new iPhone, which hits the market on Friday. To prepare for the new product's release, Digital has launched two websites: one with over 150 free trailers, and another through Adult DVD Empire which allows users to download full-length hardcore scenes. "We've been working on this for quite a while," Digital Playground founder Joone told AVN. "We started preparing for it as soon as we heard about the iPhone. We're really looking at this as another avenue for the user to enjoy their movies." The Digital Playground site includes 158 free trailers. The majority of Digital's trailers are softcore, with the exception of recent productions from Robby D's Handheld Pictures. Adult DVD Empire is offering 280 full hardcore scenes from DP movies at $2.95 per download. "You purchase the movie or scene, or download trailers onto iTunes on your computer so you can sync it up with your iPhone – it's not happening directly over the air," Joone explained. "For the trailers they go to our website, and in the store area they'll see a link for iPod, click on free subscription to the trailers, and then their iTunes will automatically download all the trailers they want to the podcast folder. To get the full-length scenes and movies, they go to the link on DVD Empire. You can go there and purchase complete movies, or mix and match your favorite scenes. While mobile porn has yet to break big in the United States, Joone told AVN that he sees the availability of adult movies on the iPhone as "the next logical step." "I think they're open for any content to be on the iPhone," Joone said. They're not in the business of censoring content, they're in the business of creating technology and enabling people. They look at this technology the same way they look at Quicktime. You can watch anything from a G-rated to an X-rated film - it's up to the end user." Joone told AVN that he worked closely with Adult DVD Empire to ensure that the download process would be "a smooth user experience." "Adult DVD Empire is the only E-tail site equipped to take on a project of this size," Joone said. "We have forged a wonderfully symbiotic business relationship based on our shared love of new technologies and I am excited to debut this service to our loyal customers." "We're thrilled to offer the first adult content for iPhone," said Jeff Rix, founder of Adult DVD Empire. "This is a perfect partnership for us, and we're proud to be on board with Digital Playground." "It only makes sense that the first iPhone adult content is available from Digital Playground, they are always one step ahead of the game," added Adult DVD Empire's director of operations Mike Barry. "This is a huge step forward in adult entertainment, and as time goes on I believe that the demand for mobile content will skyrocket." "I'm so honored to know that Digital Playground is the first again," said Digital Playground president Samantha Lewis. "I'd like to thank all of our friends at Apple and Adult DVD Empire for their combined efforts to see this through."

i don't see a single fucking quote from their "friends at apple" saying how they've worked alongside dp or even discussed anything with the company. Quote:

ISSUE 1)
Companies not upgrading for iPhone
Jessica E. Vascellaro and Nick Wingfield The Wall Street Journal Jun. 19, 2007 07:45 AM While millions of consumers are eagerly anticipating Apple Inc.'s launch of its iPhone next week, Bill Caraher is bracing for the worst.
Mr. Caraher, technology director of von Briesen & Roper, a Milwaukee law firm, says he is being besieged by inquiries from employees wondering whether the office's email system can be used with the device.
His answer, at least initially, has been no. The main problem is that the iPhone can't send and receive email through the company's corporate BlackBerry email servers. He says he is unwilling to look into workarounds, because they might compromise the company's security. "It's another hole in the system people can exploit," he says.
This scene is being repeated in workplaces throughout the country as Apple moves closer to its much-ballyhooed rollout of the iPhone. While iPhones can be used for email, for now, many businesses don't plan to sync them with internal email systems that use technology from BlackBerry maker Research In Motion Ltd., Microsoft Corp. and Good Technology, owned by Motorola Inc. That means many iPhone users won't be able to directly send and receive messages through their corporate email systems, although they may be able to forward their work emails through a third-party service like AOL or Yahoo Mail.
ISSUE 2)
Apple iPhone and Windows Vista - Compatibility Issues?
Posted by Will on Tuesday, June 12th, 2007
Apple iPhone may not be compatible with Windows VistaWindows Vista, the highly anticipated update to Microsoft's Windows XP, had iPod owners up in arms over compatibility issues. It seems Apple didn't see fit to endow the latest Microsoft Windows OS with the ability to sync with an iPod. That's sad and all, but there's a more pressing question. Will the Apple iPhone be compatible with Microsoft's Windows Vista platform? Or will the excitement of getting your hands on that brand-new iPhone quickly die when you find that you can't sync it with your Windows Vista-powered PC?
Interestingly, there is no specific (or indirect) mention of the new Windows OS in the Apple iPhone's minimum system requirements: Mac: Mac with a USB 2.0 port, Mac OS X 10.4.8 or later PC: Windows PC with a USB 2.0 port and Windows XP Home or Professional (Service Pack 2)
Notice that there is no "or later" provision made for the Windows platforms, whereas the iPhone will support Apple's Mac OS X 10.4.8 or later.
We'll just have to wait and see (we're getting tired of saying that)

Always wait for the first service pack to come out before switching to a new windows OS. You're right, nothing will work right, at least until that service pack comes out. I've used macs in the past, used to have a nice little powerbook, but can't really use them now.

According to Idell over at Digital Playground they are the fiirst compamny to offer adult iphone video.
And of course AVN and all the rest of the technically challenged sites ate it up.
I Offered iphone video on easymadedvd.com before the iphone was even announced as being on the drawing board. I guess i am precognizant.
The truth is anyone who has ipod video has iphone video cuz the iphone plays ipod video (H.264)
I guess I need a good pubicist like Idell to spin it for me.
Count me in then as well, to an extent LOL (ok not really but...), i posted a couple of the little videos i did for the girls on google video. Which gives people the option to download for ipods (and iphones as well now i guess)...

iPhone activation problems cause lots of headaches

The giddy waiting in all those lines for a new iPhone? That has nothing on all the anxious waiting to get them activated. One day after Apple Inc. released its much-hyped interactive phone, it's being both heralded and hissed at. For some, problems getting the new gadget activated have turned into nightmares. A number of new iPhone owners are complaining up and down the Internet about their service activation being slow to nonexistent. "Perhaps if you had paid $600 for a phone/ipod/god-device," wrote Mike Kobb, whose email indicates he is an alumnus of MIT, "you too would be a little upset that while AT&T's head is firmly implanted where the sun doesn't shine, you can't use a single feature of your new purchase - even the iPod - and they can't even tell you when you might be able to get it to work." Many are whining that most of the phone's features just don't work until service has been activated. "It's like I got a Teddy Ruxpin and had to wait a day for the battery delivery," harped one user on the www.engadget.com web site. "It's annoying that everything is crippled until activation is complete." Some frustrated users still waiting for their phones to be activated are calling the products "iPlop," and pointed out they were being charged a $36 fee for the - um, non -activation. "I am going 14 hours of counting with NO cell phone after trying to activate mine. AT&T said there is no ETA on fixing the problem," wrote one man on the engadget.com site. "So I have the latest and greatest in paper weights." A spokesman for AT&T, however, said that the glitches had been minor and isolated, and that the company was working to fix them on an individual basis. "The vast majority of iPhone activations on iTunes are going through in a matter of minutes," said spokesman Ted Carr. "Many of the situations causing a delay are being resolved in a matter of hours. But we are not experiencing any significant companywide activation issues." Carr said problems seem to be occurring when customers attempt to transfer their numbers from other wireless carriers over to AT&T. "We're ecstatic about the launch," he said. "Wireless will never be the same again." A Sacramento user isn't so sure. Venting about the product on Apple's web site at 3:27 a.m. Saturday, he lamented switching over from Sprint. "I stand in line for 2 hours, spend $700 for the phone, car charger and misc accessories, and now I have been waiting 7 hours, 10 minutes for this `useless brick' to activate. Most unpleasant. Is this the kind of service we should come to accept from AT&T and Apple?" Multiple calls to Apple's corporate offices were not returned Saturday morning. The iPhone, which is built around a large touch-sensitive screen, has been anxiously awaited by many tech savvy fans since it first announced earlier this year. It costs $499 or $599, depending upon the model, and requires a two-year phone service contract. It is expected to go on sale in Europe later this year and in Asia in 2008. So perhaps it was with some jealousy when someone from Germany encouraged others complaining on Apple's internet discussion board to take the activation snafus in stride. "Those strange things," the German fan opines, "is what you have to pay to be in the revolution." SOURCE

Not true, Loopnode. I've used my 60Gb iPod to watch video on for the last two years and it handles movies just fine from one side of the coast to the other while ugly women refuse to serve me drinks.

Strange. If I decide to watch a full movie (without forwarding or rewinding or pausing etc) on a plane guaranteed I have to charge the pod after about 1hr, unless I'm using the battery pack
Now I even rarely watch porn clips on the thing unless I have it plugged to the AC which pretty much defeats the purpose of "portable video" so I just watch music videos.

Loop...why do you expect yr applecrap to work properly when you talk such shit about it... Quote:
Just like anything apple makes, it's all a fancy piece of plastic that doesn't work properly.
...it is obviously an issue of spite.

Loopnode, I can play at least one full length movie--2 hours--no problem and usually a 30 minute episode of something else without battery issues. That's the standard iPod battery too, not some bulky add on thing.
It's my third iPod and the best one for battery life, but then it's usually plugged in charging either at work or home. Maybe that helps?
