I believe HIV causes no symptoms itself after the initial flu-like symptoms. This is part of the problem: an untreated individual may be infectious for a decade or more before becoming symptomatic.

Another way of covering it: HIV (virus) causes AIDS (illness) after a long delay if untreated.

If she can afford the drugs and can tolerate them she'll probably never get AIDS or have any symptoms of it. Taking all those pills and avoid contact with others that would infect them may be the only changes she has to make (no more appearing in porn).
