Although tomatos are fruits, as are any other produce containing seeds - including cucumbers, peppers, peas, etc - the term "vegetable" has a much broader connotation and can describe any and all edible portions of a plant, including leaves, roots, stems, and fruits. So strictly speaking, it isn't inaccurate to call tomatos vegetables, but it would be rather like referring to an airplane as a "vehicle" ( ie. all fruits are vegetables, but not all vegetables are fruits ).
