Although when I did have my site at the time even though it was free, people did donate out of the goodness of their hearts. I made little profit off the free site, it paid off the hosting fees and then I took 50% of that money and donated it to an organization/foundation. Hopefully i'll get some good karma out of that in the near future LOL.
