Members of the church helped run Al Gore's 1988 campaign in Kansas. Fred Phelps Jr. hosted a fundraiser in Topeka, attended by Al and Tipper Gore. Fred Jr also served as a Gore delegate to the 1988 Democratic National Convention. Of course, after Gore teamed up with Clinton and switched to supporting gay rights, they hated him so much that they picketed his dad's funeral just to tell him his dad was in Hell.

Fred Sr. also got an award from the NAACP for his civil rights work, believe it or not.
