i love opie season...better weather

yeah it sucks for Phil...cancer? Anyone watch "after the catch"? I thought it was interesting that the Hanson brothers had a middle brother that apparently never wants to be on film...i had not heard that before. I was not real happy with the beginning of the season but it has gotten great. It was amazing the extent of damage to the boats from the storms.

my faves are edgar and the hillstrand brothers. can't stand the 'north american' crew. they need to get that piece of shit boat out of the water already. their captain (i think) bears a striking resemblance to luke ford. <--- perhaps i should mention that this has nothing to do with why i can't stand them.

Sig claims that putting his name and boat on a box of Russian import crabs will make the price of domestic crabs go up. Dude needs a lesson in macroeconomics.

Quote:

(Fortune Magazine) -- In the Bering Sea, waves freeze as soon as they hit the deck of the Rollo, a 107-foot crabber out of Seattle and a star of Discovery Channel's top-rated reality series Deadliest Catch. The Rollo is one of about 70 ships registered to operate in Alaska's booming fisheries; over the course of a two-week journey, its five-man crew, headed by captain Eric Nyhammer (in blue), will collect up to 200,000 pounds of snow crabs, a nearly $300,000 haul.

95 million pounds of crabs will be pulled from Alaska's waters by the end of the winter season, a quota set by the state and federal governments. That's 45 million more than in 2000, when quotas were slashed and officials cut the number of registered ships from about 250 to less than 80. Thanks to that respite, plus unusually cold ocean temperatures that help crabs breed faster, the seas are better stocked than ever.

$4.30 per pound is the typical price Alaskan fishermen get for king crab, the most expensive species (the snow crabs pictured here fetch $1.40). Five years ago king crab was $6.27, before Russia began an export boom that doubled U.S. supply. Alaska recently demanded that Wal-Mart (Charts, Fortune 500) stop misrepresenting Russian crabs as American; its packaging uses an image of a ship from the TV show.

July 8th installment:

Deckboss Monty has a shitty sense of humor, which is better than Captain Keith, who has no sense of humor at all.

Captain Phil is two smokes away from a pulmonary embolism.

Sig gets the boat stuck in ice at the dock...stupid Scandinavians.

The youngest Hillstrand almost kills his friend with a crab pot. Imagine that injury report... "Scott's friend (decapitation)...injured reserve..."

...all done with zero alcohol. Imagine what happens when they get into port.

King Season #1:

Calm weather. Big Calm.

Captainship battle apparently brewing on the Time Bandit. Someone call Rick Quashnick and Blake Painter for advice.

Phil had a pulmonary embolism on the Cornelia Marie last year...and may have another. He got left at the dock.

Keith on the Wizard may have escaped throat cancer, but SCUBA diving under his own boat rang his bell...hard.

Sig and his brothers are their usual, neurotic selves.

Therea are intimations of a dead sailor on one of the camera boats.

I missed #2, but #3 was a real barn-burner:

Most of the show was devoted to the sinking of the Katmai, which was actually fishing for cod a long ways away near Adak Island.

The film crew rode along with the USCG as they rescued four guys who spent a day in a raft at about 20 degrees. Seven others didn't make it.

As usual, Captain Keith cried. Then he got lonely and tried to phone Captain Phil, still in the hospital, except the phone cut out. And Sig didn't tell his dudes about it at all. But he did ask to have the camera turned off after he got done talking about it.

Oh, and this...this is especially ghey:

Take a good look at the username again...

"Dead or Alive" does seem to be getting more airplay in the last year or two. Maybe I am just noticing it more.

It's been a pretty slow three weeks...

F/V Time Bandit bagged their quota and went home, and drank...a lot.

Jake on the Northwestern talks shit about his boss...on camera...to a world audience. Good luck getting a job there next year, brah.

Keith on the F/V Wizard is still gripping about walruses...a week later. Why doesn't he get out his lucky rabbit foot and rub it against the bulkhead while the crew rubs Monty's belly for good luck? Maybe a Genesis Skye video would turn the luck? WTF?

The C.M. is phucking comatose.

Ditto for the "rittle ferra," the Lisa Marie.

The death of Alaska fisherman Phil Harris, of 'Deadliest Catch,' is met with tributes.
February 11, 2010|By T.L. Stanley

Fans of the late Phil Harris, the salty, tattooed captain who starred in the Discovery Channel’s “Deadliest Catch," will still be able to see him doing the work he loved when the show launches its new season in April.

Harris suffered a stroke late last month as he offloaded snow crabs from the Cornelia Marie in the port town of St. Paul, Alaska. He had been in an Anchorage hospital since then, where he died Tuesday night. He was 53.
