TEHRAN - Producers of pornographic videos in the predominantly Muslim nation of Iran could be put to death, under a new law passed by government leaders.

According to the Middle Eastern news website, AKI, Iran's "culture committee" approved legislation that makes pornographic filmmakers subject to the death penalty, if the videos are deemed vulgar by the country's censorship standards.

Pornography in Iran, which has gone for years unchecked, became an issue earlier this year after an explicit "celebrity" sex tape was released that featured a prominent Iranian actress having sex with her partner.

According to AKI, The proposed law will now go to the Iranian parliament where it is expected to be largely approved.
