PARIS (Reuters) - The French dislike themselves even more than the Americans dislike them, according to an opinion poll published on Friday.

The survey of six nations, carried out for the International Herald Tribune daily and France 24 TV station, said 44 percent of French people thought badly of themselves against 38 percent of U.S. respondents who had a negative view of the French.

Only 14 percent of Germans, 25 percent of Italians, 29 percent of Spaniards and 33 percent of Britons had a negative view of the French, according to the Harris/Novatris poll, which questioned more than 1,000 people in each country.

We have an election coming up, so I believe that our great nation can close this self-loathing gap!

Here's a good start:

"[Giuliani] said if a Democrat is elected, "it sounds to me like we're going on defense. We're going to wave the white flag there."

But, he said, if a Republican wins, "we will remain on offense" trying to anticipate what the terrorists are going to do and "trying to stop them before they do it."

Nobody hates on Americans quite like other Americans, uncivilized cultures excepted, of course. In a historical comparison, when was the last Presidential election to have this level of tension and polarization in the months(years) leading up to it? 1968? The last one, in '04? 2008 is gonna be a hell of a ride.

It only makes sense the French hate themselves more. They have to smell theirselves everyday.
