ASSHOLES!!!

1st they denied he even worked for them - putting it all on WFAN. It was MSNBC that built him a million $ studio in NJ.

I don't care for Imus but this is blatant over-reactive "political correctness".

Good time replacing his ratings, btw.

Fuck you MSNBC. I'm not watching anymore!

Is there really a black woman who considers "nappy ho" an insult? If a young kid called them that they would laugh and put on their CD of rappers calling everyone a "nappy ho".

Imus was crude, but all he did was use the vernacular of the average young black man. The media creating its own frenzy.

He's getting crucified (Easter reference) because most of the Hollywood bigshot apologists got off with their "I'm sorry, let's just forget about it" sermonettes. Desgraciadamente, Imus is being made the poster child for actually paying for your transgressions. He'll reemerge in XM or Sirius, and be free to be the idiot he is with no fear of censorship.

I've always kind of wondered who in the hell watches MSNBC at 6:00am anyway. That time slot has all the entertainment value of a North Dakota AM station noontime commodity report.

I hope this censorship goes both ways and the media takes a long look at how some of the rap radio stations refer not only to white people but to black women. Somehow I doubt it. Personally things said on a comedy show should be taken with a grain of salt by either side.

I didn't realize iMus was comedy - isn't he just a cranky old fucker that pops off about things he doesn't like (eg. minorities)?

Stern doesn't pretend to be anything but a jackass, and politicians don't suck up to him, so it's easier for him to skate.

Finally, I'm a little fuzzy on this whole First Amendment argument. As I understand it, the First Amendment gives you the right to speek freely
Quote:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press...

Doesn't that mean that the gov't can't prosecute you for your speech? It doesn't suggest that people should be encouraged to spout ignorant shit.

I'm no expert on American Constitutional Law, but where's the first amendment issue? He says a bunch of ignorant shit, and other people say ignorant shit like "hey advertisers, we are organizing boycotts of your products if you don't exert economic pressure to stop supporting stuff we find repugnant." See - free speech, it's all good - law of the marketplace prevails.

If someone was suggesting iMus go to prison, THAT would be a free speech issue.

Basically, Grizz, the standard is the proverbial "Fire in a Crowded Theater." But you're right: The first amendment gives the haters the same right to put pressures on his networks and advertisers. It is, ultimately, a marketplace issue.

I'm sure Tom Delay has no fans here, but he raised an interesting point. Why wasn't Rosie O'Donnel fired for making fun of Chinese Americans? One of the many ridiculous things about this is that Imus raises an average of $40M for kids and runs a ranch for children dying of cancer. And when will Jessie and Sharpton appologize to the Duke players?

From Michelle Malkin (I'm too lazy to link)

The No. 1 rap track is by a new sensation who goes by the name of "Mims." The "song" is "This Is Why I'm Hot." It has topped the charts for the last 15 weeks. Here's a taste of the lyrics that young men and women are cranking up in their cars:

This is why I'm hot
Catch me on the block
Every other day
Another bitch another drop
16 bars, 24 pop
44 songs, nigga gimme what you got . . .
. . . We into big spinners
See my pimping never dragged
Find me wit' different women that you niggas never had
For those who say they know me know I'm focused on ma cream
Player you come between you'd better focus on the beam
I keep it so mean the way you see me lean
And when I say I'm hot my nigga dis is what I mean

Let's move down the Billboard list, shall we? The No. 2 rap track in the nation this week is by rappers Bow Wow and R. Kelly (yes, the same R. Kelly who was indicted five years ago on a raft of child-porn charges and is still awaiting trial). The "song" is called "I'm a Flirt," and it's been on the charts for 12 weeks:

Ima b pimpin
I don't be slippin
When it come down to these hos
I don't love em
We don't cuff em
Man that's just the way it goes
I pull up in the Phantom
All the ladies think handsome
Jewelry shining, I stay stuntin'
That's why these niggas can't stand em
Ima chick mag-a-net
And anything fine I'm bag-gin it
And if she got a man, I don't care
10 toes and I wanna be, cause I gotta have it

The final line:

Now the moral of the story is cuff yo chick, 'cause hey,
I'm black, fresh, and I rap, plus I'm rich, and I'm a flirt.

Al Sharpton, I am sure, is ready to call a press conference with the National Organization for Women to jointly protest this garbage and the radio stations and big pimpin' music companies behind it.

Or perhaps the New Civility Squad is not convinced yet that the Billboard chart toppers I've highlighted are representative? Let's proceed to No. 3 on the Billboard rap charts this week (and on the charts for the past 13 weeks): "Go Getta" by a rapper named "Young Jeezy" with a special appearance by R. Kelly (again!). Here's the "chorus":

You know we trap all day
Play all night
Dis Is Da Life Of A Go Getta (Ey) Go Getta (Ey) Go Getta (Yea)
U In Da Club
U C A Bad Bitch
Point Her Out (Oh)
Yea U Damn Right Ima (Ey)
You Damn Right Ima Go Getta (Ey) Go Getta (Ey) Go Getta (Yea)

The No. 4 song on the Billboard Rap Tracks charts is "Throw Some D's" by "Rich Boy featuring Polow Da Don." (It's been on the charts for 18 weeks.) Here's the chorus:

Rich Boy sellin' crack
F—k niggas wanna jack
Sh-t tight no slack
Just bought a Cadillac (Throw some D's on that bitch!)
Just bought a Cadillac (Throw some D's on that bitch!)
Just bought a Cadillac

The lyrical rap poet known as "Unk" has the No. 5 spot with "2 Step." On the charts for nine weeks, here's a taste of his dope rhyme:

I See You Got It Right
Beat My Wrist Ice
Colder Than A Bud Light
Now I'm a Take My Time
Where The Gangsters At
And You Can Still Post The Wall Nigga Holla Back
Grey Goose And Yak
Blunt Filled With Kush
I'm Getting Jiggy With It
Smoking On That George Bush
Step

And at No. 6 is "Rock Your Hips" by "Crime Mob." Here's the non-obscene part:

She rock her hips
She rock her hips
I like that way
She rock her hips
She rock her hips
I like the way
She rock her hips

But you can't have a hit without the n-word, of course:

Now I got 32 flavors of that bootylicious bubblegum
Raspberry, grape, cherry,
Come and get this honey bun
Yummy-yum baby, not your ordinary lady
Known to drive the niggas crazy

One dumb radio/television shock jock's insult is a drop in the ocean of barbaric filth and anti-female hatred on the radio.

I'm critical when adult businesses make bad decisions. Well CBS outdid them on this one.

1. Loss from Imus Program $20M ($100M over five years)

2. Loss of critical lead in to WFAN sprts radio (battling competition from ESPN radio) $32.5M ($150M+ over five years)

3. This is my favorite part. I understand that Imus's contract did not contain a provision which would release CBS from paying his contract should he be fired. He is in a five year contract paying him $7M a year, so toss another $35M in the trash.

I may be in the minority, but I reckon using the phrase nappy headed ho is racist. On a purely etymological basis, it's racist. It singles out genetic traits found only in that race, so it's pretty cut and dried.

Now, the bigger question is should there have been quite such a knee jerk reaction? Probably not, but most of what we say and do has to be taken in context. Imus' comments were made in the context of watching a bunch of black (can I even still use that word?) basketball players and remarking on them. That ultimately does make it a racist comment.

However, if he'd said it about a group of hookers on a street corner, no one would've batted an eye. It's just more double standards in life. Imus fucked up, but I think the punishment outways the crime in this case.

I don't get why IMUS was fired as compared to so many others who say offensive things every day. Or why this statement? I hazzard to joke that Karl Rove was behind this to bring out conservative votes becuase they may be saying something like that at Daily Kos.

But seriously, I don't get why Imus was made an example of?

I think Imus went because it was a slow news day and all the networks picked up on it. Plus, the FCC probably broke wind in a loud way. They've had more failures than successes lately, and I suspect some people may have pegged Imus as a Judas Goat rather than fight the FCC and the resultant publicity and share plunge.

His exposure, and the pressure brought to bear by advertisers. If the offensive words came from the Crappy and Sniffy show in Cheboygan, I doubt there would be any repercussions of note.
Also, if I were hangin' with my black friends, in the 18-35 demographic, and we heard it on the radio we'd probably laugh like hell and I'd say "Oh man, that is so wrong" and that would be the end of it. Again, Imus' exposure to the more mature demographics is massive , and as such, he should have known better!

Not with Political Correctness being out of control, Conky. Under the new PC Regime, Willie and I are no longer Irish. We're "Anglicly Challenged." My partner on the Job, Tony, is no longer Black, but "Melanin Proficient." And our boss, Angelo, is no longer Italian, but a "Pasta-Phile." It's gone too far, I tells ya.

So ... anyone got a pic of the team? How many of them really are really nappy-headed anyway?

Would it have been better had he called them all rug-munchers?

One irony: I think Imus was about the only national radio show to regularly invite Democrats to talk, giving them air time and exposure that they can't get elsewhere in radio. I think the left show themselves in the foot on this one.

Do you think that any other radio shows noticed that when the time came, none of the people Imus helped were willing to say anything in his defense? And what about the charities - who is going to fill in there next year?

William Hyde adds his two cents. Heidi e-mails Luke:

I find myself in the uncomfortable position of having to agree with you Luke. At least in the sentiment, if not the particulars of your reasoning. This isn’t really a free speech issue as no one, including MSNBC, has questioned Imus’ right to call the Rutgers Team “Nappy-headed Ho’s” (at least when he’s not on the air!). The real issue is the response it has drawn, and how vividly it highlights the chilling effect that political correctness has had on public discourse. When so-called “leaders of the black community” make hay over ridiculous incidents like this, it destroys their credibility, and the credibility of those who are addressing the real and serious consequences of discrimination in America. These buffoons think that by prescriptively controlling the language we use in this country, they can somehow control our thoughts and feelings and thus, magically erase centuries of painful history and bad blood. It’s not only antithetical to the principles of democracy, it’s patently absurd! No one is going to erase racism from the human heart. And, for that matter, none of us should want to. Racist views, whether we find them offensive or not, still constitute a valid philosophy. The only problem with this philosophy is that it contradicts the most fundamental principle underpinning our body of laws - namely, that “all men [and women] are created equal”. But the solution to that problem is not to try to censor any expression of racism, but rather to more vigorously uphold the rights ordained in our constitution… by combating real instances of discrimination -in employment, wages, housing, education, etc- and ensuring an equal opportunity for each to rise according to their own merits and the strength of their character.

who the fuck is Imus and why is he all over my TV...?

Things like this are good for keeping the Angry White Man angry. There must be a sacrifice everyonce in awhile to propogate the nonsense.

Once again Snoop provides the voice of reason...

Quote:

The superstar rapper Snoop Dogg also denied any connection to Imus. "(Rappers) are not talking about no collegiate basketball girls who have made it to the next level in education and sports," he told MTV.com. "We're talking about hos that's in the 'hood that ain't doing ---- that's trying to get a n---- for his money."

Sorry Heidi, I ain't buying what you're selling. iMus made his career on racist jokes and was a national public figure that revelled in his ability to mock minorities. His status 'normalizes' racism as a 'vaild philosophy' (it's not a philosophy, just narcissism) and makes it easier for 'normal' people to refuse to hire blacks or rent apartments to East Indians.

Secondly, there are laws on the books in most western countries that protect people from discrimination in cases of "employment, wages, housing, education, etc" (although they are selectively enforced). As we discussed elsewhere, the iMus situation is not criminal, it is not constitutional it is the marketplace at work. The networks hired iMus (ostensibly) because his outrageous behaviour draws a crowd, which drives ratings which attracts sponsors. Individuals can't do much about it, but by pooling resources, the marketplace can create a liability for the sponsors/networks (bad PR, boycotts, shame) that levels the playing field. Ultimately the networks (and their sponsors that pay them) get to make a judgment call based on their own criteria balancing whether the profits the man generates outweigh the headaches.

Finally, The so-called scourge of political correctness is just a bogeyman to allow people who know they're wrong misdirect attention from the fact that they've said something indefensible. Rush Limbaugh can whine about "PC" because it gives him cover, as well as an opening to make further racist comments.

Supplementary: I'm not saying the Reverend Als and Jesse are good people far from it, but their 'job' is to mobilize their base (just like Repunklicans do with gay marriage issue) and they're pretty good at that. The danger they face is that by ringing the bell too often, they lose moderates and the mainstream by being alarmists and hypocrites.

I want to see Sharpton be asked to apologize to the Duke Lacrosse team in every interview he gives for the next year.

Hey Al can't ever live that down, and he should have been ashamed of himself - but does that mean he can never be right about anything?

Give a monkey a shotgun and he'll hit something sooner or later.

That's the problem. He's hit too many of the wrong people already.

But it is only racist comments that pass a certain political litmus test that get punished. This is why Imus, Limbaugh, and Trent Lott get a rolled up newspaper across the nose whereas when Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and Rosie O'Donnell make the same kind of comments they get a pat on the top of the head and a scolding of Jagamir Jagr like softness. The PC decision makers go throug a mental checklist before rendering their decisions. Was the offended black, hispanic, gay, or Muslim? Is the person making the comments known to be a conservative or a Republican? If the answer is yes then they shall be made to deep throat a branding iron as punishment. Was the offended white, male, and/or Christian? Is the person making the comment known to be a liberal or a Democrat? If the answer is yes then fuck em serves them right.

Why has no one mentioned Jews? If one even criticizes the US policy towards Israel they are automatically branded Anti-Semites.
