Minister gets fatwa for hugBy Bruce Loudon in Pakistan Link April 11, 2007 01:00am Pakistan Tourism Minister hugged Frenchman in public Clerics say she 'brought disgrace' to all Muslims Family, friends fear for Minister's safety ISLAMIC clerics have issued a fatwa against Pakistan's Tourism Minister after she was photographed hugging a Frenchman. Clerics of Islamabad's Lal Masjid, or Red Mosque, said Nilofar Bakhtiar had acted in an "obscene manner" and brought "disgrace" to Pakistan and all Muslims. "She has committed a great sin," said the fatwa, issued on Sunday by two clerics at the mosque's department of edicts. In the first such fatwa issued by a new shariah court set up at the mosque, the clerics demanded that she be sacked and punished and that her family "force her to ask for forgiveness". Photographs appearing in Urdu-language newspapers showed Ms Bakhtiar hugging the Frenchman at a tourist resort in Normandy, France, after the pair jumped from an aircraft together. "I hugged an over-aged man who is even older than my father," she said yesterday. Ms Bakhtiar on Monday rejected the edict as "baseless", but said her family and friends were concerned for her safety. She accused Pakistani newspapers of presenting "distorted" captions for the pictures after she had jumped without training. "It was just a pat because he felt so proud of me," she said. "I felt very happy also because it was affectionate and very encouraging." Her France visit was attracting tourists to Pakistan and raising funds for victims of the 2005 earthquake that devastated the country, Ms Bakhtiar said. "What I did was right and patriotic. I fear no one but God." The decree from the Red Mosque is the latest chapter in a Taliban-style anti-vice campaign launched by its hardline clerics in defiance of state authority in the relatively liberal Pakistani capital, despite President Pervez Musharraf's promotion of moderate Islam. The three-page fatwa, issued under the seal of mufti Mohammed Younus, quoted the Koran and Hadidh (prophet Mohammed's sayings). "Islam does not allow such actions from a Muslim woman with a non-Muslim man," it said. The fatwa was backed by major Islamic political parties, led by the right-wing Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal, which filed a motion seeking action against Ms Bakhtiar.

That's definitely a worthy contender for "Fatwa of the Week". BTW, for the ones who care, one of my favorite fatwas is the so-called "camel fatwa". An oldie but goodie... Quote:
[...] This was an attitude that still prevailed in the minds of German judges one year after the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks.
At the time, the higher administrative court in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia ruled that a female Muslim student in the 10th grade should be permitted not to take part in a school trip. The family had argued that Islam prohibits allowing girls to go on such trips without being accompanied by a male family member. The family also insisted that the girl was constantly worried about losing her headscarf. The judges found that such fears were "comparable with the situation of a partially mentally impaired person who, because of her disability, can only travel with a companion." This assessment was devastating because it accepted the rules of a camel drivers' society in the modern age -- literally, because a few years earlier, an Islamic legal opinion dubbed the "camel fatwa" had been added to the professional literature.
Amir Zaidan, the then chairman of the Islamic Religious Community in the state of Hesse, wrote the opinion. He argued that a Muslim woman could travel no more than 81 kilometers (50 miles) from the home of her husband or parents without being accompanied by a male blood relative. The opinion came to be known as the "camel fatwa," because this was the distance a camel caravan could travel within 24 hours in the days of the Prophet Mohammed. [...]

Here's another fatwa that's just about as ridiculous as it gets. Nudity during sex annuls the marriage.Cairo - An Egyptian cleric's controversial fatwa claiming that nudity during sexual intercourse invalidates a marriage has uncovered a rift among Islamic scholars. According to the religious edict issued by Rashad Hassan Khalil, a former dean of Al-Azhar University's faculty of Sharia (or Islamic law), "being completely naked during the act of coitus annuls the marriage". The religious decree sparked a hot debate on the private satellite network Dream's popular religious talk show and on the front page of Sunday's Al-Masri Al-Yom, Egypt's leading independent daily newspaper. Suad Saleh, who heads the women's department of Al-Azhar's Islamic studies faculty, pleaded for "anything that can bring spouses closer to each other" and rejected the claim that nudity during intercourse could invalidate a union. During the live televised debate, Islamic scholar Abdel Muti dismissed the fatwa: "Nothing is prohibited during marital sex, except of course sodomy." ( ) For his part, Al-Azhar's fatwa committee chairman Abdullah Megawar argued that married couples could see each other naked but should not look at each other's genitalia and suggested they cover up with a blanket during sex.

Malaysia issues fatwa on ghosts A Malaysian museum has closed an exhibition on supernatural beings after Islamic religious authorities issued a fatwa, or decree, against it, state media have reported. The National Fatwa Council had ruled on Thursday that exhibitions on ghosts, ghouls and supernatural beings were forbidden, as they could undermine the faith of Muslims. Abdul Shukor Husin, the council’s chair, was quoted as saying that “supernatural beings are beyond the comprehension of the human mind.†“We don’t want to expose Muslims to supernatural and superstitious beliefs,†the Berita Harian newspaper quoted him as saying. Mythical attractions Thousands of visitors had attended musuem in the western state of Negri Sembilan since it launched the ghost and genie exhibition on March 10, due to run until May 31. Its curator had previously resisted calls from Malaysia’s arts minister and a religious leader for it to be shut down amid criticism that encouraging a belief in ghosts was un-Islamic. But Kamaruddin Siaraf, Negeri Sembilan’s state secretary and chair of the state museum board, said the exhibition was terminated after the National Fatwa Council ruled against such events. He said the decision was made out of respect for the council’s views, the state Bernama news agency reported. Malaysian government officials have already called for a ban another exhibition in a state museum that has put on display decaying objects described as the carcasses of a genie and a mythical phoenix bird. Last year more than 200,000 people attended an exhibition of about 100 coffins, ghosts and genies that organisers claimed included relics of mermaids and vampires. SOURCE

There is a shopping mall in KL called Sunway Lagoon. It was intended to be an Ancient Egyptian themed mall with an attached water park and all sorts of statues. The Islamic religious authorities would not allow it either. They said images of the ancient Egyptian religion would undermined the Islamic faith. So the mall backers changed the statues to animals (Sphinx into just a lion and so forth).
Funny thing is if you walk down any street, in KL, containing a Mosque, you will likely find a Hindu, or Buddhist Temple, or a Christian Church, next to it. They seem to only be vocal against non-existent religions. Strange isn't it?
