Its a talk show so its not legal advice. But I think its good having a "lay person" contribute and give the whore's perspective, since that is who the show is directed toward.
What is this obvious plagarism you speak of?

there are some very smart lawyers but it's not 40 years ago. every liberal arts student at a 4-year place you stand a chance of not getting into is a potential lawyer. there are a shitload of lawschools today, many of them are available as nightschool.
if you show up to every class as an undergrad, put some level of effort into it, and pay someone at kaplan you can end up with a decent gpa and i know from teaching idiots there when i was 20 for the sat's one summer-you can get an idiot to fall pretty close to average on standardized tests. it's supposed to be a dirty-iq test but if you take it again and again in practice the scores go up pretty predictably until a percentile a little above the mean. meaning there are tons of people going from pretty ugly numbers to the 150's, but you'll rarely get someone in the 150's into the 170's.
so you can be pretty fucking average and end up sitting in a room taking the bar.
there's still an image lawyers and md's making about the same as each other and less than people in finance but being more learned that doesn't reflect the reality right now.
kids coming out of law school aren't going to live like consultants of oncologists for the vast majority, nowhere close. it's not an instant-job that makes six figures anymore.
and you didn't get into yale and you didn't make the NBA, and getting a gig at cravath where you wear a fancy suit isn't going to happen. most lawyers pay for their own gym-memberships, don't belong to country-clubs and they might never make six-figures in their lives. better chance in ny, chicago, boston, etc.
so remember kids, there may be VERY smart lawyers, but there are so fucking many of them now there are some pretty fucking stupid ones not making much money.
it's possible some of the better-written porn chicks could have gone to law school.

Well put, getting through law school is not the difficulty these days, it's passing the bar where the real "standards" are. If one can get through first year law, one can graduate. The bar can take a number of times to complete though. John Kennedy was a good high profile example, took several times for hime to get his skin. All that is the easy part, then you have to put in 90 hour weeks for years to become the holy grail "partner." That's when the ducats start rolling in.

I've heard that 80 percent of people who take the bar exam fail the first time. My brother is graduating from Georgetown Law next month, and then he's coming back to California to take the bar. Ugh.. I'm sticking to porn, thank you very much!

Even those of us who went to the right school and got the right job have our issues.Working 12-14 hrs day after day, weekends ..ect, arguing the most important Multinational Sub-Lateral Quantified Bi-Monthly Prospectus Agreement case
takes its toll. As a partner you get increased pressure and administrative tasks which make the hours longer still.
A good description of legal work is that its like mixing cement with your eyelashes. The people are you work with tend to be obsessive compulsive paranoid freaks. Law enforcement tends to be more rewarding, yet the compensation causes miost to go to the civil big firm side.

My first bar was around 14 years ago. The wounds are still healing. People use the word miserable alot. The bar exam truly deserves that word.
My advice for those with family members going through that gauntlet is be understanding, leave them alone and just don't say anything about the exam that could possibly affect their confidence. Best luck to all of them.

Getting into law school isnt that hard. Staying past the 1st year is depending on the school. The harder to get in the harder it is to fail out. Average students can get in, but most fail the 1st year. If you're not coming from a solid undergrad school and have a 3.5+ gpa you're probably going to have a hard time at a decent school.
I thought law school was rather easy. There's one secret no one tells anyone -- read ahead. Professors play hide the ball, but the answers are usually found 2-3 chapters ahead of the current assignment. Once you see the bigger picture it all starts to makes sense. Dont lose the forest for the leaves.
I didnt grad from a top law school. But I was 11th in my class and on Law Review after the 1st year by simply reading ahead. Its not rocket science.
Top tier law schools are only necessary if you want to work at a big firm. You will learn the same law from the same books at a 2nd tier school that students at Ivy League schools learn.
As for the Bar Exam, again, not that hard. Most people fail not because they dont know the subject matter, they just spent 3 years learing it. What happens is that they panic, they dont rest and they second guess themselves. In California its a 3 day test - a marathon. The best advice I can give people about to take it -- pace yourself. Dont burn yourself out and study too much too soon. You should peak as you go into the test and get plenty of rest while taking it. And never discuss that day's exam with friends. Its over move on.
As for salaries, law is the original pyramid scheme. Be your own boss, have your own firm. Work as an associate and the partners make all the money. Be the partner and have your associates make you the $$$.
I like being a lawyer which is more than I can say for most of my lawyer friends.
Digging ditches, loading trucks and roofing are hard jobs, not being a lawyer.
