Maybe the mallards had make-up sex after you left, and all is right in their relationship. Geese, OTOH, are nasty buggers and I always visualize shooting them and what a nice dinner they would make. Can't help it, cuz' I am the son of an old Marine who made me spend months shooting at paper targets before he would even let me carry a .22 out in the forests.
