i'm in the city and last night i was flipping through the channels and this horrible semi-porn show was on like, local-access. i don't watch too much tv so i hadn't seen it before but i was immediately reassured that "oh, it's been on for years" by my fellow television watcher.

What Borough are you in? I know Manhattan and Brooklyn have shows like that. Not here on Conservative-as-Shit Staten Island, though. There are several cable companies in the city.

manhattan. cable's time warner i think. it's not that there are naked people on what is ostensibly basic cable, i've seen that before in parts of the EU enough. it's how BAD the thing is and how UGLY the naked people are.

Yeah, Time Warner has three different operations in the city, including here on the Island. "Community Standards," I guess. There's plenty of freaks in Manhattan. I guess enough of them got together, paid the registration fee and had at it.

It was probably Robin Byrd. She used to show strippers and porn stars who were in town featuring or shooting. I don't think she's created a new episode since 1990.

Yeah, Robin Byrd. As a lifelong New Yorker, I have to tell you that her show was crazy must-see viewing during the time it was live. You're seeing an edited, bastardized version that's been running on a repeat loop since about the mid to late '90s. At Robin's peak, in the late 80s, early 90s, you could see all the porn-star talent and street hookers working the Eighth Avenue live sex shows and peep booths. The girls--and truly disgusting male talent of all varieties--would show up on their set breaks--drunk, on smack, coked-up, etc. Then you could race over there and see them live if you wanted. Those were the days. (Not really...)

I talked to her at AEE in 2006. I thought it would be a great idea to get those things on dvd, but then realized that you'd have to get rights to all the live music--stuff a whore often brought in and played on her own boom box. Heather Hunter was on that show constantly.

I always thought it was better than Goldstein's shit by far. He used to bitch and complain about answering machines and deli service. Byrd was great get-home-from-the-bar-at-4 a.m.-and-pass-out-face-first-in-your-food viewing.

Charlie makes a good point. I loved them both. I just hated all those goddamn male strippers that she used to parade on the show along with the fucking gay sex phone ads she had (has) on there.

I know what you mean. I recall turning it on one night and seeing a poppered twink dancing like a zombie while holding a gardenia. Seriously.

There was a group interview segment at show's end that was often entertaining. There were lots of misses on that show, but the hits were priceless.

BTW, Byrd was in Debbie Does Dallas.
