I can't find it online, but there's a church in Manhattan that wouldn't sell and developers built up and over it. It sits in an alcove of a highrise iirc.
The Shrine of Elizabeth Ann Seton, the first American Born Saint. It's a Federal-Era building at the tip of Manhattan, directly across from the Ferry Terminal. It's wedged between two buildings, the newer of which was built around the Shrine in an L-Shape, so that its enclosed on three sides. I don't know if it was because they wouldn't sell (although they most likely wouldn't) or rather because of its landmark status. The Landmarks Preservation Committee here can be pretty dogged, to say the least.
