Not very original choices, I know, but these are also my two favorite Cash songs when it comes to his old stuff. From his American Recordings era I enjoy his renditions of U2's "One" and NIN's "Hurt" the most.

Some Cash trivia

Did you know that Johnny Cash recorded German and Spanish versions of his songs for the European market? -> Article

If you want to listen to "I Walk The Line" in German ("Wer kennt den Weg?", which translates as "Who knows the way?"), then click on this link.

Oh my..., "Hurt" is probably the best cover version of any song that was ever written. I'm not ashamed to say that I cried when I heard it for the first time. Actually not figuratively. Additionally, it's one of the few cover versions that are not only not inferior to the original, but better. By lightyears in this case.

Johnny Cash was THE MAN . Not in a stupid "Gram the Man" www.-era cool signature way, but in the purest and deepest sense possible!

His covers of "Solitary Man" and "I See a Darkness" on American III are pretty unforgettable.

"Well I hope that someday, buddy
We have peace in our lives
Together, or apart
Alone, or with our wives
And we can stop our whoring
And pull the smiles inside
And never go to sleep
My best unbeaten brother
This is not all I see..."

I went to YouTube to get a hold of Wall of Voodoo's "Ring of Fire" and found this conspiracy-filled video:

I should check AWOP more often. For me it's too hard to pick one song. I have been listening to his cd Unchained lately.

He covers Beck, Soundgarden, and Tom Petty. Also, the song Country Boy is very good. Sometimes I have to skip the more spiritual songs but at times they're a good listen.

Get Rythym is my all time favorite, but there are so many more. Hey Porter ranks very high too.

Awesome tune. Props to that little nigga Danzig for penning that one, and for penning the last great Roy Orbison tune, Life Fades Away, which until recently was only available on the Less Than Zero soundtrack, but now can be found on the Essential Roy Orbison package.

IMO, all the American Recordings are superior to the early stuff. I'm not a big Rubin fan, but him and Cash created some timeless music together.

Let's not get all emotional man. Hurt was a plenty good enough title by NIN. Reznor puts alot of feeling into his early tunes.

Nothing is ever better than the original. Hadn't the orignial artist(s) got together to record an original, who's to say there would have ever been one?

It's not just you. I felt the same. As a big fan of Cash knowing where he was in his life- diseased, recently widowed, ready to die and hearing the song and later, seeing that video...it was so incredibly apt. Sorry Reznor, the man took your song.

There's been covers that are better than the original. Elvis did it with Hound Dog. Hendrix did it with All Along the Watchtower. Of course, neither were as poignant as Cash's Hurt.

14 Covers that were better than the original

"Hurt" doesn't make their list, but probably should.

Hmph. Cash is great, but that video reeks of pretension, and all the lip-syncing reminds me of George Michael's "Freedom 90", which is not a flattering comparison.

i was willing to look past any campiness in the george michael video at age 12 because i have a penis and it approves of linda evangelista and unhealthily-skinny women in general. and i'm not even sure mr. westhollywoodreststop was in the video.
