Well, there are "hookers" and there are "hookers".
I've never picked up a streetwalker or called someone from craigslist or one of those escort ads in the city paper.
However, I've been around strippers enough (was married to one for six years) to eventually start getting offers to "help them make some extra cash".
This works pretty well. No pimps or cops in the equation, I know them well enough to know which substances they are abusing, and yet you still get the benefit of knowing they will go home afterward and not expect flowers or a phone call. You can discriminate between the ones that fuck anyone who pays for an extra couch dance and the ones that are sick of not making enough money and heard that Calvin is usually up for something and won't store their dismembered body in his basement when he is finished.
In some cases, the relationship has transitioned to "fuck buddy", which is cheaper but then you have to wait until they really want to fuck instead of knowing that every time a bill is due you will get a phone call asking if you can "help them out"
