"Keep the Aspidistra Flying" by George Orwell great book about a failed writer who has serious issues with class and money.

A Tour of the Calculus, By John Berlinski or something like that. I don't really like math, but I like books about math.

By Duff Cooper?
Fascinating indeed. Served Louis XVI, the Directorate, Napoleon, and then the restoration. Just too damn good a diplomat for anyone to care that his only loyalty was to himself. A Catholic Bishop, a whoremonger, a cripple. Infamously referred to by Napoleon as "shit in a silk stocking". After which, Bony still employed him for many years, just because he was the best in the world (possibly save Metternich) at what he did.

I just read some biography of Ghengis Khan. Fascinating, I had no idea as to the secular and multicultural governments he set up nor the innovations born from his reign that are still used today. If anyone is interested I'll actually grab it and list the author. Before that I read "The Massacre at El Mozote", a non-fiction account of, you guessed it, the 1982 killings in El Salvador. Dirt poor Salvadorans caught on the business-end of the Cold War, and yet another case of American meddling in Latin American affairs.

I like to read books I read a while back over again.
"The Guns of August"
Durant's "Caesar & Christ"
"The Koran" [sometimes gets interesting reactions from people sitting next to you on the plane].
Calvin & Floof: I'm going to check those out!! I'd love the title/author on the Khan book.
Zen: Ever read "The History of Pi"?

it's by david lawday actually: napoleon's master. a fascinating time in history to be sure, i'm going to get a book on von metternich soon- any recommendations?
between uni reading, the newspaper, and the economist each week i don't have too much "free reading" time, but it's always good to hear what other people are reading.

Please allow me to suck some of the intelligence out of this thread.
Toxic Avenger-the novel: Written 20-something years after the movie was made. Lloyd Kaufman(director of the film and co-author of the book) says in the forward to think of the book as their version of a big-budget Hollywood remake of the original film. It's been quite funny, so far.
yeah, I read books for entertainment value.
Please, feel free to go back to discussing books with more intellectual value.

Eddie - I've actually not read anything specific to Metternich. A good idea for my next project. Fatman - If you are re-reading Tuchman, try "The Proud Tower", a far-ranging study of the pre-war (WWI) period. The chapters on America's first steps toward imperialism are particularly interesting. Even more relevant is her "The March of Folly", which examines how administrations can become locked into policies that are clearly counterproductive. Her examples range from the archtypal Trojan Horse through British colonial policy in the Americas to the Vietnam War. Written in the 80s, it has obvious applications today - espcially for a serviceman serving in Iraq such as yourself!

Let's see. Went back and revisited A Tan And Sandy Silence by John D. MacDonald, then James O Borne's Escape Clause and am now cutting through Randy Wayne White's Dead of Night.
I'm having a Florida noir month.
I think the last non-fiction title I read was either an Al Franken or a PJ O'Rourke. I like to be balanced in my political satire. Probably why I prefer crime fiction as a rule. It's less fantastical.

"Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World", by Jack Weatherford; Three Rivers Press.
BTW, I read "The Guns of August" last year on the recommendation of a friend. He said it was the book that ignited his interest in military history, so much that he earned a degree in it and ultimately a career with the IDF and their spooky counterpart. Go figure.

thx, Floof!!
Last time I read it was over the summer of 1977 as part of a HS history elective, and I took it with me on our vacation that August to Israel and Rome. Since I'm going to Europe for the 1st time since then, I decided to bring the same book, albeit with a little wear-and-tear over the years.
