i remember someone- pris?- started a books thread awhile back, and, apart from pris' involvement, it was quite interesting. so here's another one, though instead of all time fave books i want to know what you've been reading lately- last month or so.
atm i'm halfway through a biog on talleyrand, fascinating stuff.
By Duff Cooper?
Fascinating indeed. Served Louis XVI, the Directorate, Napoleon, and then the restoration. Just too damn good a diplomat for anyone to care that his only loyalty was to himself. A Catholic Bishop, a whoremonger, a cripple. Infamously referred to by Napoleon as "shit in a silk stocking". After which, Bony still employed him for many years, just because he was the best in the world (possibly save Metternich) at what he did.
it's by david lawday actually: napoleon's master. a fascinating time in history to be sure, i'm going to get a book on von metternich soon- any recommendations?
between uni reading, the newspaper, and the economist each week i don't have too much "free reading" time, but it's always good to hear what other people are reading.
