BELFAST, Northern Ireland - Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams was re-elected to the Northern Ireland Assembly as Sinn Fein appeared on course to remain the major Catholic-backed party in the British territory, according to results Thursday.
Adams, 58, topped the voting in his longtime power base of Catholic west Belfast. He was among the first declared winners for the 108-member assembly following Wednesday's election to find out which Protestant and Catholic parties will control the assembly and hold the key to revived power-sharing in the territory.
Sinn Fein activists cheered wildly in the major ballot-counting center, the King's Hall conference center in south Belfast, as Adams took the winner's podium. Nearby activists from Protestant parties booed or stood stony-faced.
The vote-counting is likely to take two days before all winners are declared. Northern Ireland's complex system of proportional representation allows voters to pick candidates in order of preference, requiring ballots to be counted several times.
Just before St. Patrick's day too ...

Don't blame us because Martin Luther screwed up that whole free will/predestination concept. And that was no Diet at Worms...the fucker was drinking beer the whole time.

Now all the results are in, we have a Unionist overall majority, with hard-line Unionist Ian Paisley's DUP the biggest party. Perhaps they should re-write the headline as "Sinn Fein Loses NI elections", although a more honest one would be "NI elections same as ever".

We still get under your skin, don't we? By the way, thanks for the Protestant Ascendancy and all, may we dispossess your family of its land now?
Whatever makes you think I'm a Protestant? NB, my avatar selection was merely a counter-point to yours. I'm actually of southern Irish Catholic descent, funnily enough, but it's been three generations since anyone cared. (Although that still makes me just as Irish as many of the flag-waving faux-Irish in America. Just curious, but how Irish are you, really?)
I just thought I'd point out the hypocrisy of glorifying something that was completely against the Republican's own faith. Granted, it sure made useful propaganda for fund-raising though:
Bobby Sands Trust = Sinn Fein Sinn Fein = Political front for the Provisional IRA Provisional IRA = murderous bastards
Under my skin? Maybe a little, yes. I can walk 5 minutes from where I sit now at home to a place where innocent people, who were just out for a night on the town, died for the sake of your pathetic cause. I'm talking rather more current than the potato famine. People like you paid for those bombs. Gee, but 9/11 sucked, didn't it?

You're Damn right we did. At least I did. And so did most of the New York Irish I know. We gave tons of money to NORAID and the Provos during the Troubles. We gave freely and proudly. And we'll do it again if Adams and McGuinness decide that the political road is a dead end. Anything to kick the sassnach out of Ireland once and for all. You Limeys were warmongering imperialists long before there was a United States. There is neither time nor space to recount the long history of how Britain Raped, Enslaved and Brutalized the Irish, and Willie would probably do a better job of it than me. But, after centuries of abuse at the hands of the British, any acts of the Provos are more than justified.

What did we do to deserve 9/11? Defend the right of the State of Israel to exist? Station troops in Saudi Arabia to protect the "Birthplace of Islam" in the event of an attack by Sadaam? Those were Osama's stated reasons for attacking the US and, like all terrorist logic, they're pretty weak. There is NO way you Limeys can compare the two, and to insinuate, like so many Limeys have, that somehow New York got what it deserved is pure hypocracy. I lived through 9/11 in New York. I had friends die in the towers. I have other friends, firefighters, who will never be the same after what happened. And I had a member of my family who, like so many other New Yorkers, joined the Marines in response to 9/11. He was killed in Iraq last month when his helocopter was shot down over Anbar. Don't you Dare go comparing 9/11 to the Troubles, or imply that we somehow deserved it. The British, Ivor, brought their troubles upon themselves. (No pun intended.) Not New Yorkers.

IB, I'm gonna stick to this one alone, because you and I both know a war of words about Ireland on XPT is not going anywhere. For every PIRA post you send, I'll send another one about the various Loyalist paramilitary factions or the Black and Tans. I'll send you my e-mail address if you want to discuss it one-on-one, because yeah, you are closer to the problem. Likewise, I'll tell you what it was like to turn on CNN and know that a few thousand folks just got incinerated in NYC.
To your question, I am third generation Irish on my mother's side (Co. Antrim), and a half fourth-generation on my father's side (Co. Kerry). I don't know how the math works out. How about we just tip a glass and help end this 400-year ridiculousness?
Better yet, explain to me why the Israelis, our only true ally in the Middle East, want Jonathan Pollard released from jail.

Oh, I get it now. So what you're saying is that if Monstar's people had commited 9/11 you'd be right behind it.
Now you're being preposterous. What happened to Monstar's people happened a long time ago. Britain continues to occupy Ireland to this day. And 9/11 was committed by assholes who had no justification whatsoever.
And besides, Monstar's people built the Twin Towers. Do you have any idea how many Indians are in the construction business?

Convoluted logic. You limeys stole the Native American's land before there even was a United States. Just another in a long string of peoples subjugated by the British. You've been kicked out of the rest and it's just a matter of time before you get kicked out of Ireland, too.

Not my fight, but ...
Intentionally directing attacks against civilians is wrong.
Putting the blame on the British for the genocide of the native americans is naive. One of the issues of the revolutionaries was that the colonist expansion into Indian lands was being limited by Parliament.
Many fought on the side of the British in the American Revolution. Most of the tribes were "relocated" well after the British left. The Cherokee even won at the Supreme Court, but Andrew Jackson decided to violate the Constitution and move them anyway. Etc.

In other Native American news: the Seminole just bought the Hardrock franchise for $965 million. That's a lot of scratch.
