If "free speech" is only allowed when the timing is acceptable to the authorities, then what value does it have?

I agree with Calvin in spirit, but this comes down to things I've thought about Rob Black etc. in the past when it comes to unnecessary envelope pushing at the wrong time to make a quick buck, and then scurrying back under the safety of the vanilla porn umbrella when the Feds knock on the door. However, despite Calvin's irrefutable logic, I still want to round up the villagers, gather pitch forks and clubs and head to castle Frankenstein like any good mob ought to. Willie, you're in charge of the burning torches. The movie itself is another example of how dumb some porn chicks can be. At least there was little risk of brain damage.

it's really fucking stupid to play around when you look at the risk-reward of the whole thing.
you can't rely on discomfort or lightheadedness as stop signs with choking. you can still die or damage your brain without your body giving you any kind of signals something is going if your CO2 levels in your bloodstream are low for whatever reason. people get killed or retarded without feeling the normal warning signs, so any kind of "safeword" or "stop signal" the performers are instructed to use can still leave you with a corpse or a incontinent person unable to feed themselves.
while it's debatable inflicting brain damage on the braindead is a crime, some porn chicks exhibit basic literacy and more so killing or making them dumber than skeeter is probably a really bad idea if you don't already intend to. normally, you'd have an alibi and a place to dump the body instead of a camera and having ben english know they're on your set that day.

So you're kind of invoking Zeno's dichotomy paradox (if you're always halfway to an endpoint, you'll never actually reach the endpoint). Look, I agree that they have the legal and commercial right to produce this thing, but that paradox can probably only survive in a bubble. In certain regulatory climates, you have to draw back and make intelligent business decisions. When the SEC clamped down on financial reporting of public companies, what idiotic company went to their CFO and said, "Go ahead and cook the books just a little bit more." When the EPA began enforcing CERCLA in the 1980s, what coal plant in PA didn't install scrubbers on their chimneys? And let's not even get into the regulatory burden of 2257, I can name at least 10 industries which have a tenfold burden on them to report to Uncle Sam.
Besides, if you're correct, the whole asphyixiation thing is a guy thing, then this is nothing more than a publicity-seeking porno maker. Why doesn't he just send a copy to the FBI and save the taxpayers a lot of money.
As to donkey punching and similar gag factorings, you'll notice that Donkey Punch is no longer distributed, and JeffMike was indicted based on 2 Gag Factors (15 and 18, actually).

The old Gale's Cake problem! If a utility-maximizing consumer has a single piece of cake to consume, what is the optimum consumption pattern? You never actually finish the cake, you always just eat 1/2 of what is left.
Of course, this breaks down when you modify the utility function to account for addictive behavior. The true addict never puts away half of their stash every time. And unless you literally enjoy mathematical masturbation, don't even try it with a utility function that puts all the fun at the very end.
So, maybe taunting the legals is addictive behavior, and they are maximizing utility rather than profit - getting off on seeing how far they can take things, in the same way that many actual criminals do.

I'm not saying that it is a conscious decision to ignore profitability and legal ramifications just for the thrill.
No gambler says to himself: "You know, this really isn't a good bet if I look at the risk-reward ratio. But, I'm so addicted to the thrill that I'm going to overlook the dangers just this once. This is why it is so hard to model human behavior using so-called "rational" economic models. You have to tweak the model, so to speak, to account for things such as addiction, and then assume that all this decision-making occurs subconciously.
This porn series is a good example. It just isn't rational, from a legal or an economic perspective. What is the market for people who want to see a girl pretend to choke herself into unconsciousness, and is it large enough to cover legal costs? But these questions are subsumed by the rush of being "edgy" and "controversial", and a conscious rationalization is developed to justify the product as being so edgy that it must somehow be economically viable.
