I've used Blueray with good results, however, believe our boys at Sony have an uphill battle with their proprietary format. It's more expensive than HD DVD and the differences are not that great. Bottomline, another Beta vs.VHS battle for king of the hill brewing.

Honestly, i'm going to let the two duke it out for the next few years, and then go with which ever one's still around. Don't wanna get stuck with the next Laser Disc player.

Article from L.A. times today concerning the competition between these formats and the influence porn has over the outcome. If for nothing else, the article is good for this passage: "During those hushed meetings with the producers, HD DVD and Blu-ray promoters insisted on secrecy as they touted the features of their respective formats. Each was sensitive to concerns specific to adult entertainment, such as how to edit out the surgical scars that would otherwise be far too visible."

I've seen plenty of nasty implant scars on SD (regular DVD) that nobody seems to want edited out so what's the big deal? As far as the format war is concerned, HD DVD is losing big time from the looks of it. There are few companies exclusive to the format and their content has been minimal of late while Blu-Ray titles have been selling better and offering a broader range of releases. Porn isn't likely to be a player this time around either since increasing numbers of people simply download for free.

Interesting. HD DVD $400+; Blue Ray $999 in Best Buy yesterday. There is not that much difference in the quality. Blue Ray needs to get to about $350 per unit before there will be widespread adoption IMHO.

A lot of people use their Playstation 3 as their Blu-Ray player from what I hear, also picking up the cheaper BR player (Samsung?) that got less than stellar reviews for under $500 (IIRC). I agree that the player price will need to come down before either become more than a niche item but with most of the exclusive company's siding with BR and the current releases favoring it, HD DVD better start doing something better, and quickly.

LG are already producing hybrid players that will run both new formats. Might as well wait for those unless you've already spent out.

Unless you've got an Xbox 360 plus HD-DVD drive and a PS3

Yes, already looked at those dual mode jobs. Waiting for them to come down just a little more. Probably in the fall.

I've never really liked components like that. If either part of it breaks or has a problem, you lose the whole unit (repair costs tend to really suck these days). The problem with the gaming systems is that the they don't handle all the things I'd want, as a reviewer for example, with the HD add on not doing the audio properly (per the experts at my review site).

I have an HD DVD player and will get a PS3 next week by the looks of it but also wish the consumers would just make up their collective mind on which format, if either, will win.

Yeah, the XBox 360 add on was the game device with the truncated audio options. Have you found any really worthwhile games for the PS3? I'll probably be picking one up any day now by the looks of it.

Huh? It's plug and play, HoustonDon. Just throw the accompanying disc into the 360 to update the firmware (I think), plug the USB lead in and you're into HD-DVD territory straight away. The quality is just as good the HD machine at work, although you notice the 360 fan noise sometimes during quieter moments.

As I've been led to understand it, the add on player doesn't have HDMI (until the end of next month) and had weaker audio capabilities. It was a bit of a heated discussion among some of the reviewers awhile back (I advocated letting 360 add on owners use the machine to review while others thought the audio issue was enough to kill the idea-I never had a stake in the matter personally but I'm not an equipment snob).

Audiophiles. God, I love those guys.

From a review of the HD-DVD drive:

"HD DVD supports a maximum resolution of 1080p - and the latest Xbox 360 firmware update adds support for this. In addition, you can also choose to downscale to 1080i or 720p if either's the native resolution of your TV. For HD output you'll need either a component-video or VGA cable - unfortunately there's no HDMI cable for the Xbox 360. While this isn't a huge problem at the moment, it could cause issues in the future."

I run mine through the VGA port and have no problems with it. Plus, if you're running any sort of home cinema set-up, sound really shouldn't be an issue. Even through the VGA port, the quality is stunning.

I only have 3 games so far but all 3 are worth getting.

Ridge Racer 7
Virtua Fighter 5
Marvel Ultimate Alliance

This weekwend I plan on picking up MotoStorm.

I'm more of an RTS fan but there are a few games that looked pretty good when scanning clips via the internet...
