1861, Jefferson Davis was elected the provisional president of the Confederate States of America.

1864 Union General George Armstrong Custer marries Elizabeth Bacon in their hometown of Monroe, Mich.

1870, the U.S. Weather Bureau was established.

1895 Volleyball was invented by W.G. Morgan.

1900 Davis Cup competition established

1971 Satchel Paige became the first Negro League veteran to be nominated to Baseball Hall of Fame

1978 Canada expels 11 Soviets in spying case.

1981 Bill Haley dies

1984, Soviet leader Yuri V. Andropov died at age 69, less than 15 months after succeeding Leonid Brezhnev; he was succeeded by Konstantin U. Chernenko.

1984 NBC Entertainment president, Brandon Tartikoff, gave an interviewer the "10 Commandments for TV Programmers."

1986 Halley's Comet reaches its closest approach to the Sun.

1994 Nelson Mandela becomes the first black president of South Africa.

1994 The Hershey Chocolate Company celebrates its 100th birthday.

1997 "The Simpsons" became the longest-running primetime animated series. "The Flintstones" held the record previously.

2001 "Hannibal," the sequel to "Silence of the Lambs", opened in theaters.

2001, a U.S. Navy submarine collided with a Japanese fishing boat off the Hawaiian coast, killing nine men and boys aboard the boat.

Oakland's Rich Gannon led the AFC to a 38-30 victory over the NFC in the Pro Bowl.

President Bush defended U.S. surveillance efforts, saying spy work helped thwart terrorists plotting to use shoe bombs to hijack an airliner and crash it into the tallest skyscraper on the West Coast.

Kidnapped American journalist Jill Carroll appeared in a video aired on a private Kuwaiti TV station, appealing for her supporters to do whatever it took to win her release "as quickly as possible." (She was freed on March 30, 2006.)

Neil Entwistle, whose wife and baby daughter were found shot to death at the couple's home in suburban Boston, was arrested on murder charges in his native England (Entwistle is expected to go on trial later this year).
