I just got finished reading Sun Tzu's "The Art of War". This book is one of the best I've ever read and you can apply it to so many things. I was wondering if anyone here has read it?

I've read it a few times... as a student of eastern philosophy i think it is a great book, filled with knowledge that, yes, can be applied to many situations. That, combined with The Prince make for a wonderful guide to business... for general life... i lean toward Lao Tzu, the Tao Te Ching is probably one of the most important books i have read, in fact i carry a pocket sized version constantly.

I'm trying to tie all of these things in with coaching and I'm having trouble seeing how this fits:

Required reading for many disciplines and fields today....Sun Tzu was actually a mercenary free agent General who sided with the employer/emperor with the bigger army for him to lead, rather than the Biggest upfront PAYDAY for his services. He knew the Kingdom of Wu would prevail if he lead the armies, after which he could then simply TAKE whatever the fuck he wanted... Smart MoFo. Clausewitz and Jomini are more current in terms of the wars of the last 200 years, when Politics superceded the previous issues of Simple Survival and resources as Casus Bellae. I also suggest The Curtis Lemay Cold War Collector's scrapbook, "Nuke Em, and then Carpet Bomb their Potato Fields -- My Life as a Warrior of Wetsern Civilization".... Goddamn it, I'd Piss on a Spark Plug if I thought it would do any good.... Mandrake, do you know what Fluoridation in our Drinking water is? The Russians Only Drink Vodka... "All Whore-fare is Based on Deception..." i.e. Whores Lie...

Well, it's pretty plain to me...it's what Bruce Lee refered to in Enter The Dragon: 'The Art Of Fighting Without Fighting'
In layman's terms, a few carefully executed mindfucks can have your opponent beaten in their own mind before battle even commences.
I don't know what sport you coach, but one of the most famous examples in English football is Sir Alex Ferguson, coach of Manchester United. His team were 12 points behind league leaders Newcastle United (3 points for a win, 1 for a draw, 0 for a defeat), and he just made a few carefully chosen comments in an interview and Newcastle's manager Kevin Keegan lost the plot completely.
See for yourself, it's the stuff of legend in England. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QzDakZzA2UQ
End result, Newcastle crumbled, Manchester United closed the gap and won the league title. As much as I hate to admit it, Ferguson is a black belt master at playing mind games with referees, opposing managers and players. As such, Manchester United didn't beat Newcastle, Newcastle beat Newcastle, and hence superiority was achieved and the enemy's resistance was broken not through head-to-head confrontation, but through words.

Just to clearify, do you mean "important" in a general cultural literary context by your estimation, or "important" in that it has specifically impacted your life in a remarkable way for better or for worse? I imagine youll chime in "both" in your new cretinous hubristic fashion, but I'm only really interest if it's the latter. I'm wondering whether you Chinged before or after your ill advised sojourn into the pornography and how the insight you attained while Chinging is reconciled with such decision either forwardfs or backwards.

Aside to board proper: where is that one picture that Ceara's bunny friend remarked about Rob's "baby hands"?
To be perfectly honest, while the Tao is culturally significant to it's time and to its impact on the development of other philosophies and Traditional Chinese Medicine... I was referring to it being significant to ME and my life. while it has some import in todays society I feel unfortunately too few are familiar enough with it for it to count as important.
I became a Taoist when i was quite young after having a conversation with my Sifu (Chinese for teacher <actually teacher-father> in this case my Kung-Fu instructor, who also acted as a surrogate father for me up until about the age of 21) about religion and he turned me on to the Tao and the I-ching.
Taoism is about balance and relativism. What I do for a living, and following along whatever path I follow is just taking the path that was provided for me. Have there been times when I have forgotten all of this... yes, whenever I don the image of the "evil man" for some reason" it always ends up making me miserable because it is not in my nature to be that way, that has caused me to fall down paths that did me no good.
Tao (dao) merely means the natural way of the universe, and in reflection the natural way of yourself. To me monogamy and such is not the natural way of the universe. Life is about balance and flow, if you disrupt either you throw everything off, that is the essence of Wu Wei. Hence why I am a technological progressive, in my view of the Tao it is the natural flow of civilization to progress and to change. One of the biggest aspects of Taoism is the ability to change, the ability to adapt, the ability to adjust.
If you want real fun ask me about my flirtations and infatuations with both Ch'an and Tibetan Buddhism.

The Way is the fate of men, The treasure of the saint, And the refuge of the sinner.
Fine words are often borrowed, And great deeds are often appropriated; Therefore, when a man falls, do not abandon him, And when a man gains power, do not honour him; Only remain impartial and show him the Way.
Why should someone appreciate the Way? The ancients said, "By it, those who seek may easily find, And those who regret may easily absolve" So it is the most precious gift.
Quote:
Do not control the people with laws, Nor violence nor espionage, But conquer them with inaction.
For: The more morals and taboos there are, The more cruelty afflicts people; The more guns and knives there are, The more factions divide people; The more arts and skills there are, The more change obsoletes people; The more laws and taxes there are, The more theft corrupts people.
Yet take no action, and the people nurture each other; Make no laws, and the people deal fairly with each other; Own no interest, and the people cooperate with each other; Express no desire, and the people harmonize with each other.

Exactly Dan, Sun Tzu is referring to breaking your opponent without having to use any sort of violent force. That can maen several things... in a one on one confrontation, it can mean either breaking your opponent mentally and sapping him of his will to fight, or it can refer to leading your opponent to defeat himself with his own actions.
In Warfare it can be seen as destroying your foes morale, crippling them economically so they cannot afford to fight, or instigating dissent in their ranks and or subjects. Sheer intimidation also works as a factor.

Fatman... a paycheck, is a paycheck, is a paycheck... i got paid rather decently to sit in my own home and fuck my wife in that set.... I think the fact that my only thing I had to do outside of a normal realm was sit in a makeup chair wasn't too bad a deal.(Especially because i got to play WoW between sets while they switched the lights up). Not bad if you think about it... and I doubt any one of you would have turned it down. If someone said, we are gonna pay you to do what you would be doing tonight anyway, we just want to put you in makeup... you all would jump at it and i will leave that at that.

You do crack me up. To end my "food stamp" crap for "all time", its just that I cannot see an otherwise healthy white male looking for food stamps as "thrifty", just as a kind of pathetic off-brand form of "stealing". But, then I don't know the Ching ... Be well.

my original comment on food stamps was made in a jestful resignment. I figure if Jeff is gonna spew his bile in my direction let him, deflect it and laugh with it...
Honestly I would never do it for the main reason that it would be stealing, and also personal pride... even if i needed it, i could never do it, it would be something that would make me feel a degree of self loathing, one of the few things.
I have a noble fault in my in-ability to steal... anything. A friend of mine once stole contact lens solution while i was at the store with him... i turned around, went back to the store, and told them we forgot to ring it up and I paid for it... just so it wasn't on my conscience.
I apologize if you really thought i was serious in that regard, i was just laughing off Jeff's comment and sliding past it... it gave me a giggle.
I may be cheap... but I am NOT a thief, a fraud, or someone who would accept a handout from anyone... even the government.
