when i first read the holly going into rehab thread it did strike me how nice everyone was being, considering if it had been almost anyone else they would be shot down. so luke has somewhat of a point there, although, it has been made many times before: xpt adores holly. another thing xpt always rewards is honesty- the bitchiest threads are always about people deemed hypocritical or duplitious. holly was honest, holly gets respect. as i have yet to say it, good luck holly.

luke's second point, that alcoholism is not a disease, is perhaps a result of his australian upbringing. rob remarkably does stumble somewhere near the truth- australia does have a very high alcohol consumption per capita, so what is considered normal drinking behaviour in australia might class you as a raving alcoholic in the states.

also, australia doesn't really go for the whole addicition is a disease mantra pushed by organisations such as AA. not that we discount addiction as being a serious problem, just a different, less sympathetic, thought process. current psych theories on addiction also don't buy much into the addiction is a disease paradigm, and often point out that such thinking, combined with others such as "once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic", can sometimes do more harm than good in terms of offering a bleak outlook for recovery.

having said that, luke does go massively overboard by completely discounting brain chemistry and claiming people are gay by choice. but still, at least the guy's posting interesting shit that brings some sexy back to the cage.
