Ok, guys.. pardon me for a minute... i am gonna explode if i dont get this out of my system.

Reading this supportive thread about Holly Randall's entry into rehab on the normally vicious Monkey Cage nauseated me.

Yes, I only want good things for Holly, and I am glad she's getting support at this time of crisis, but if you don't give a damn about Holly, what better time can there be to mock her?

I'm tired of this sacred hands-off approach to drunks and other addicts who go into rehab and start twelve-stepping.

OK, how about this... What better time to support someone than when they have decided to right the things wrong in their lives. What better time to support them than when they need it most, they are struggling through something difficult, and the support of others can be very beneficial to getting them through it and helping them to recover.

Despite the general tone of XPT, and the monkey cage... I take the view that these are not all terrible people here. Just people who fuck around behind a keyboard. I have had several pissing matches with people here, while PM'ing back and forth about how funny it is.

Seriously Luke, instead of nauseating you it should reaffirm your faith in humanity to see that even the "dregs of society" perverts who post here have human compassion (which you seem to lack) and can support someone when they need it rather than tear them down.

What better reason is there to make fun of someone than that they can't control themselves? If someone spent hours a day on a computer masturbating to porn, wouldn't it be right to make fun of them? Isn't "wanker" or "fag" a frequent put down because people realize there is good reason to stigmatize masturbation and buggery? If someone masturbates in public, shouldn't they be mocked? If a pornographer (or porn journalist or porn lawyer etc) keeps hitting on talent half his age, isn't that worthy of mockery?

So, because some people find something right to stigmatize.. it IS right? So i suppose you are saying the oppression of the jews was right because it was socially accepted that they were evil? Or that enslavement of blacks was right because it was socially accepted because they were lesser beings?
Quote:

Yes, making fun of people is not nice, but if you are going to mock someone, it is better to do it for their moral failings than for things they can't help (such as their looks or intelligence).

How about this, you are someone who preaches about moral failings yet you sit amongst the filth you supposedly hate. You surround yourself by it because you love it, even though you pretend to loathe it. You love looking at porn girls, you get a rush from feeling you have "defiled" yourself. You look for dirt and stories and gossip... sometimes for no other reason that to start shit. You love causing strife. You profit from what you claim to loathe.

I don't believe that people are biologically compelled to hurt others needlessly, to drink to excess, to take drugs, and to have gay sex. I believe we have free will and we are responsible for our choices.

What conky said here is right on... If you do not believe that... well... your a sociopath anyway, you thrive off of hurting people who you deem as unclean.
Quote:

I'm sick of hearing that people are born gay. Yes, it may be true, but then every man is born a sexual predator, a rapist and an adulterer. It is not natural to men to restrict their sexual expression to their spouse just as it is not natural for some men to restrict their sexual expression to the opposite sex.

Oh wow, your ignorance is in a dimension on par with the Ted Haggards of the world. Genetic dispostions are genetic dispositions, people cannot help that fact. I had many gay friends growing up... and NONE of them "chose" to be that way, and they could never "choose" not to be that way, people who do that tend to have high suicide rates... look it up.

Though you reveal more about yourself in this next paragraph than i think even you are capable of comprehending.

So big deal. I no more feel sorry for the homo who can't screw around with the lads than I do for the 50-year old married man who's sad he can't bang high school girls.

I'm sad when I can't bang some delicious 16-year old girl but I don't whinge about society repressing me.

Creepy Luke.

I'm not claiming I am better than a drunk or a druggie or a poofter. I overflow with disgusting urges. I yearn for attention (though I'd prefer to call it 'recognition'). I am lazy. I am callous. I am selfish. I allow my sexual urges to overcome my good sense.

At least you espouse a tiny bit of honesty here... for once.

Aside from the minority of people who are just born happy, I don't understand how people can be happy without organized religion.

Its called knowing right and wrong in your heart and not needing a big man in the sky to tell you what to do. I prefer philosophies myself. Despite my whole "satanic" image i had.... I have been a Daoist since i was 16yrs old... its very freeing. If you NEED an invisible hand in the sky to smack you around... you lack self control... not I.

I don't know much about drunks and druggies because I never had any as friends until Holly. But being with someone who'd never been inside a church or synagogue, I realized the things that religion gives that I had taken for granted:

Like lack of self reliance, feelings of servitude, denial of human nature, resistance to progress, wars, violence, greed, increased perversity... honestly if we were to tally up secondary effects on a more honest scale i think you would more cities supporting their local porno shop and protesting that filthy church that just moved in.

* It instills discipline because you have to constantly deny yourself for God/community/etc.

How about instilling self discipline and doing things because YOU think it is right to, not because you have to be told to.
Quote:

* It provides you with community to monitor your behavior. It is a lot easier to convince yourself that what you are doing is OK than to convince your religious community (Dennis Prager).

how about the human race... there is a community. What about a secular organization of people, government works.
Quote:

* It gives you purpose. It gives you tons of things to do when you get up in the morning. (One reason that evangelical Christians devote so much time to proselytizing is that their religion lacks rituals and thus they have nothing better to do with themselves than bother people.)

I don't need anyone else purpose, i have my own. I cultivate myself because i know it is good for my goals and purposes. I work in my community because it benefits society for me to. I don't need GOD to tell me to do this.

* It provides the accumulated wisdom of thousands of years of a tradition. There have been a lot of smart rabbis who know more about life than I do. I learn from them.

There are ways of doing that outside of religion. Tradition does not necessarily have to be religious. Traditions passed down through family are much better anyway.
Quote:

* It provides structure. Religion dictates that you must set aside time for fun, for study, for family, for community, for work (not only do the Ten Commandments say you must rest one day a week, they command that we work six days a week).

Once again... if you cannot structure your own life... It is called being responsible and reliant for and on one's self.

Quote:

* It provides rituals which give life rhthym and depth. A week without a Sabbath is like music without climax and poetry without meter.

It might be that way for you..... but for some of us we prefer to rest when we feel like resting.

and no... not everyone "chooses to be addicts". Sometimes your doctor prescribes you something to help you and you end up addicted to it. Especially painful if it is something that can kill you if you go into withdrawal... like Benzo's.
