ORLANDO, Fla. - An astronaut drove from Houston to Florida, donned a disguise and confronted a woman she believed was romantically involved with a space shuttle pilot she was in love with, police said. She was charged with attempted kidnapping and other counts.
U.S. Navy Capt. Lisa Nowak, 43, who flew last July on a shuttle mission to the international space station, was also charged with attempted vehicle burglary with battery, destruction of evidence and battery. She was denied bail.
Police said Nowak drove from her home in Houston to the Orlando International Airport — wearing diapers so she wouldn't have to stop to urinate — to confront Colleen Shipman.
Nowak believed Shipman was romantically involved with Navy Cmdr. William Oefelein, a pilot during space shuttle Discovery's trip to the space station last December, police said.
Nowak told police that her relationship with Oefelein was "more than a working relationship but less than a romantic relationship," according to an arrest affidavit. Police officers recovered a love letter to Oefelein in her car.

How the hell did someone that is obviously mentally unstable get in the astronaut program???
The confluence of two outdated/failed American institutions:*

The Diaper
In retrospect, much like a porn girl drinking a bowl full of convict DNA, I think peeing in one's pants is actually part of the dark underbelly of being an astronaut. I don't remember a "john" on the shuttle. So to a mentally unbalanced astronaut it likely seems "normal".
If she kept the diaper, human-liquid mogul Ceara Lynch/Tierney likely can find her a market ....

I'm sure wearing the diaper was part of her training- just a walk in the park for an astronaut.
It makes what she did so much more interesting- rational enough to buy and wear a diaper to facilitate her long drive to kidnap someone...

The same amount of time it would have taken her to buy diapers = same amount of time for bathroom break or two on a 1,000 mile car trip. Um...unless she already had adult diapers at her house. Ew.

She wouldn't keep them at home, but it wouldn't be surprising to wear them home from NASA from time to time.
I know one who, after a long day as guinea pig in the centrifuge, just wanted to get home - he'd unplug the sensors and drive home as he was, flight suit and all. He had a good enough sense of humor to go through the Burger King drive-through too.  He also maintained his pilot rating for the Shuttle which required him to fly a certain number of hours every month, and he would often drive straight home from the airport in full gear (but may not have had diapers for this).
This is all from 20 years ago, and the rules may have changed. They are certainly about to change, especially if those were flight issue diapers she took home from NASA (the same as Walgreens diapers only a lot more expensive).
As I said before, adult diapers have always been part of the glamor of space flight. If you have dreams of doing the commercial tourist flights gearing up you'd better get used to it.

Although she would have to refuel her car at least two/three times enroute, she could do it outside and out of range of the store cameras. If she had to use the bathroom, she would be captured on a store camera entering the store, hence the reason for the diapers. However, in my mind, there would be a credit card receipt trail for the outside gas purchases so her diaper strategy is flawed unless she had stolen credit cards which I didn't see in the charges.

Plenty of cars can make that trip on one refueling stop. And if she's worried about cameras just pee by the side of the road somewhere: it's not that hard.
She's probably more an Evil Lunatic than an Evil Genius - I don't see this is a case where it's necessary to search for a rational explanation for her every action when there probably isn't one.

Yes they definitely do. That's what flight surgeons are for on the physical side (flight surgeons aren't there to keep them healthy, they're there to wash them out if they're not). I'm not sure what the psych guys are called but they do evals before, during, after ... She's not the only one whose career is done.
The Shuttle is an incredibly expensive machine that can't be replaced and astronauts are dime-a-dozen these days. They let her fly last summer - she's not a fringe newbie not seriously up for a flight.
I just found out they *don't* do ongoing psych evaluations any more. Amazing ... I think even from here I can hear Deke Slayton cursing about incompetents in his grave.
They get one eval as part of qualification when hired and an eval before a long-term space station stay. But she was an arm operator and didn't get any eval after qualifying.
Now, after she's back in Clear Lake after all this, they're giving her another eval. The cow's out of the barn guys.
Your right, they don't do another one unless someone is exhibiting bad behavior. WTF, NASA doesn't think that multiple shots on the shuttle and months on the space station do not add stressors to one's mental stability....?
