Jews, like many peoples of Europe, didn't have last names until the end of the middle ages when they were told to adopt them. Most of them lived in areas dominated by German speakers and had a Germanic language, Yiddish, so these chose Germanic names. Until the Nazis, Jews thrived in the area that encompassed the Holy Roman Empire.
