I don't know about the impromptu weddings though - They're so much cheaper and without all the hassle but my sister got married without telling any of us and I remember my mum and aunts etc were really upset. You can always have another wedding or reception for all the family later on though - the wedding IS meant to be all about you after all! 
Maybe this why those two did such a random thing on holiday.
