This is actually a very good question...I think the line for porn fans is the same as for fans of mainstream films/TV/music etc.
A fan per se is someone who makes a point to patronise the work of a certain individual, nothing more and nothing less. It's when said fan begins to seek out some sort of personal/proprietary relationship with said individual that we start to cross over into fanboy territory.
I could PM Gen a question, and I'm sure she'll PM an answer back out of common courtesy. That doesn't mean she likes me.
Just because I post on the same message board as Holly Randall and interact with her on it doesn't mean I 'know' her.
If I buy Gia Jordan a watch as a gift, that doesn't mean we are romantically involved if she accepts it.
Some people can't make these sort of distinctions, others sadly can't...that's where the phrase 'ADT Watch Guy' comes from.
Porn has actually got off pretty light considering some of the psycho fans/stalkers that mainstream stars attract. No one has attempted to assassinate the President and claim that Sasha Grey made him do it, like that Jodie Foster fanboy...but then you do read instances like the guy at AEE who saw fit to ram his fingers up Ashley Blue's ass whilst she was posing for a photo with him.

Is this comparable to the "difference" between Star Trek fans and Trekkies? Almost everyone uses pornography for the purposes of masturbation, but I wouldn't describe everyone who's ever jerked off to porn as a "fan". The word fan implies some degree of fanaticism. Any devotee who follows the industry and careers of the performers, producers, and directors is a fan. And as long as that person is able to indulge their avocation without it interfering in their lives, or the lives of others in a destructive way... I don't see one thing wrong with being a fan of anything. The word "fanboy", on the other hand, seems to be nothing more than an artificial label manufactured by self conscious, shamefaced fans as a way of drawing a distinction between themselves and other fans they're embarassed to be associated with. I hadn't even heard the word "fanboy" before I began posting to this forum... yet I was labeled a "fanboy" almost immediately. I certainly didn't take it as an insult. But I still fail to see the difference between my behavior, and that of the "fans" who labeled me a fanboy. I have a job, an apartment, a girlfriend who enjoys smut as much I do... and a pretty normal life ( so far as anyone's is ). I've never been to an industry convention... but I do talk to people in the industry who I consider genuine friends. There are certainly people on this board who follow the industry much closer than I do, and have closer relationships to the performers. So, besides the fact that I'm rarely in the mood for the board's ridiculous and tiresome poo-flinging... what behavior in particular would single me out as a fanboy? Have at it.

Very well put. I'd have to agree, that "fans" and "fanboys" are one in the same. The only difference, if any, would have to be the level of "fanaticism" associated with each label.

As with all things we have our own definitions. And, I would think that no one would consider themselves a fanboy in the way no one would consider themselves a bad driver.
Here I believe there are 2 forms of fanboys. First is the stalker-type who believe that there is some relationship between him and the talent that does not actually exist. This kind of person is to be avoided at all costs and it frightens/disappoints me that a person like Sportswami can terrorize some girls and others seems more than willing to fall into the same trap.
The second is more like "fag" calling where the person makes so hard an attempt to publically play up to the talent it makes you sick. This can be very hard to differentiate because in some cases it depends how it is done and/or who is doing it. Our own behavior tends not to make us sick, but another's behavior might.
For example, Ben who lives in Ceara's bunny cage and whose sig is a campaign for Gen to be in American Gokkun, is CLEARLY a fanboy.
But, CERTAINLY my posting fuzzy bunnies, discussing the well-being of Noah with Mia or posting slight teases of Gen are NOT fanboy behaviors!

Wait! So I post a lot on threads dealing with Sierra Sinn and that makes me a 'fanboy'? Whatever.........The fact of the matter is, I like SS.....she's a cool chick. I've had hundreds of conversations with her, and the vast majority of them were not about porn. She's very funny, and the most entertaining person I know.
However, I don't spend every waking moment scouring the xpt message board for topics of interests, because ......well quite frankly, I don't have the time, patience, or inclination to do so. I have a very attractive wife, I have a job where I work 10 hours a day, plus a part time job that I've kept for the last 10+ years just because I don't want to quit it, several pets, good neighbors, and many good friends, some I've known literally my entire life. I workout, I play sports, and watch a good bit of regular TV and sporting events. I don't live in my mom's basement and sit around thinking of ways to get porn whores to like me enough to want to blow me in my own little fantasyland. Sorry to disappoint.

I think anyone who's spent time at the AEE during fan hours can ID a fanboy at 1000 yards. Do I think Lee is a fanboy? Not really, no. Yes, he's leapt to Sierra's defense on occasion, but he's also a friend of hers, which discounts the fanboy status.
Now someone like AC Cream, on the other hand, is way more clear cut.
If you follow porn girls around slavishly, write about them on boards and pretend you know them really well, then hey, you're a fanboy.
If you create a lame porn-related job for yourself which probably doesn't even pay the rent (hi Swami!) in order to get close to the chicks, if you run a piece of shit blog review site or call yourself an amateur glamor photographer and are unable to sell your images to skin mags or online, then hey, you're probably a fanboy.
If you've ever written to a stroke mag asking them to run shots of your favorite girl, if you've traveled more than 10 feet out of your way to see a named performer feature dance... you get the idea.
If you're not a fanboy at that point, then you certainly need to seek out a trained professional before your buddies hold an intervention.
Some of the guys I saw at AEE just defy description (won't stop me from trying). The sweaty, greasy guys who pounced on any chick they could aim their cell phone camera at, the guys who just couldn't or wouldn't speak to the girls but were trying to play grab ass... fanboys, to a man.
And let's be clear here: those are the real problem fanboys. I don't think there's zip wrong with fanboys per se, but the sweaty borderline stalkers, those are a whole different ball game. The guys who can't differentiate between an on-screen persona and performance and the real girl off-set. Those are the ones who concern me.
