More than that - the drugs used are chosen to match the particular strain present, and I think it's common to try different drugs until something is (1) found to work (2) whose side affects are tolerable.
When two HIV+ people infect each other with a new strain it complicates treatment: you might have to try more combinations to find something that works, and you might have to settle for something less pleasant...
John Stagliano and Tricia presumably have different strains of HIV and need to take care not to infect each other.
