Anybody else like Asian movies (kung-fu,gangster)?

I was just wondering if anybody else here likes non-porn movies from Hong Kong, Japan and Korea? I mean martial arts movies or triad stuff like the Young and Dangerous series.
In terms of kung- fu I like old school movies like what the Shaw Brothers put out and newer stuff like Iron Monkey and Once Upon a Time in China. The Young and Dangerous series is also one of my favorites in the gangster genre because of the continuing character arc between movies.

The Young and Dangerous series is also one of my favorites in the TRIAD genre because of the continuing character arc between movies. ( Triad- It just doesn't roll off the tongue like Gangster when used as a desciptive term) and you are right Cheh is great

I just finished watching Mad Monkey Kung Fu, an old Shaw Brothers flick and it was great because I picked it up on DVD, one of these new Celestial releases(region 3), and they did a remarkable job with the print. If anyone likes these old Shaw Bros. joints and has a region free player or are in region 3 definitely check em out.

just saw City of Lost Souls which is a Takashi Miike yakuza flick, and there is this fight in it
with bullet time....
and kung fu....
did i mention it was a cockfight....
with CGI roosters...
best. cockfight. ever.

Smartt I saw Shaolin Soccer about a year ago on HK DVD, it is very good but then again I like almost all of Stephan Chow's movies. He is like a chinese Jim Carrey with his stupid and silly antics.

Hey Smartt or Rob Longsot or anybody that can help, I am planning a trip to Chinatown soon to pick up some more Hong kong action DVDs and was wondering if you had any more reccomendations. I have seen quite a few of the older ones but if you have any other favorites or some new ones you like please give me the heads up.

I still like Japanese Horror, Smartt even when it is confusing because it has a genuine creepy feel to it, I don't really know what the hell is going on in Evil Dead TRap but it still creeped me the hell out. Not asian- but on the subject of horror- youy guys might want to check out a little known flick called Mute Witness- it used to be 5 bucks in the walmart bin but don't let that fool you it was a good one. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0110604/

You are right Rob Ichi is great, a little confusing but great.
One Japanese horror you might like is Evil Dead Trap it is extreme and freaky.
Just watched Evil Dead Trap 
Thank God the sun's coming up, cuz I'd be still checking under beds, in closets with a baseball bat. Lots of great moments, and the ending WTF?  Great recommendation.  I thought I'd seen it all till the bullet time moment in City of Lost Souls. Man, I need to catch up with this stuff.  Also saw the first Dead of Alive and worth picking up, the next two installments will be picked up soon. Smartt mentioned Versus, as well, I'll pick that up too (I think it's a zombie flick). Sorry, this feels like a +1 post. I'll try to return the favor with some good recommendations.  I guess just thanks for the recommendations.

I liked Versus quite a bit- check it out, the action never stops in it.
I just watched a Korean Drama called Bad Guy- man if the main character was real he would certainly win the title of King of the Bastards. He conceives of a plan to get a college girl into prositution just because she told him to get lost on a park bench. Very heavy flick but the lead actor was excellent in it.

Infernal Affairs - A Police/Triad thriller/drama. About an undercover cop in the triad and a mole on the HK police force. Parts 2 and 3 are good too.

The original or the remake?
The remake has jennifer connely I think who is hot as hell. I have seen the original sitting in the viseo store but have yet to try it because haunted water does not seem too interesting. I wish the japanese (chinese and koreans) would get off the ghost kick and try some serial killer and monster stuff again.
As far as bad guy goes- what I said about it is pretty much all there is to it- it is a character study of the titular scumbag and his prisoner. It is interesting because the guy is such a bad guy and yet their is some good in him....sorta.

It´s the newest (and, Toho says, "the last") one, directed by the same guy who did VERSUS and AZUMI.

Nope, I don't have that one but I do want it. The one in your link is PAL and no english (subs or dub) according to the blurb on the page. I will have to wait for a region 1 release i guess.

thanks for the information cleetus. i saw the american godzilla that was made back in 98 awhile ago. it was actually alright. they made the baby godzillas too much like raptors from jurassic park though.
as for horror movies i saw one at bestbuy that had the girl that played gogo and was in br 1. i dont remember what its about but it seemed good.

No way dude, the american Godzilla is not really a godzilla flick at all it is a travesty. Check out some of the newer Godzilla flicks from Japan that came out after the American one. He is back to being mean and he looks cooler too. It was released in Japan on a lovingly restored edition. But it has no english subtitles. And, as usual with all things japanese, is expensive as fuck.

P.S. Again RENT, do not BUY! At your OWN RISK! have a beer (or ten) while watching these films. Again strange stuff, but worth watching. At YOUR own risk though. The Samurai becomes Westernized. Clint Eastwood doesn't even come close.

These are really kung-fu or gangsta films, but not to bad non-the less. First is 6ixtynin9, an unfortunate American re-title of The Story of 6 and 9. Not to bad, in the same style as Shallow Grave and A Simple Plan (e.g. if you find a bag of money, just walk away, problems ensue). Here's the imdb link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0235154/Again, it a thiller, not a kung-fu or gangster film and I didn't feel like making a new thread. Also, another great thiller is Blind Shaft, here's the imdb link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0351299/Very dostoevskian if you ask me. Worth rentals. Again, they are thrillers not kung-fu/gangster flicks. They are East Asian though. Sembene.

I just remembered a couple of Indian flicks that i really enjoyed: Mission Kashmir- http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0248185/and Asoka: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0249371/I wish that I could find more Indian flicks like these.
