A liberal arts college is a usually small college that teaches a traditional, uh, liberal arts curriculum (history, literature, philosophy), as opposed to a university which is larger and tends to prepare people for professional careers. You can major in liberal arts at a university though.

The punchline "liberal arts" derives from the idea the liberal arts are held by many to be more intellectually thin than, say, the sciences.

Note: the punchline does not apply to liberal arts colleges as a rule.




Old man, you are not only wrong, you are also quite clearly senile. It's not that liberal arts colleges are less intellectually demanding than universities, it's that the skills learned aren't as practical. Racking up massive debt to pursue an irrelevant degree is considered unrealistic by your average hard-working American, hence the reputation of LA students as dreamy, faggy types afraid to get real jobs.
