honestly, i misstepped in my argument there, about ortiz and de la hoya. it doesn't matter who's more popular, or who more people recognize. tito ortiz is a star. he may be a competent fighter, but more important than that he is someone people will pay money to see. that's what ufc has right now that boxing doesn't; fighters that people are invested in, who they care about, and who they will drop $40 to see fight each other. i don't think boxing is dying. they just haven't made any stars lately. you have to get the right guy and promote him the right way. right now ufc is doing that like crazy. mike tyson was never a great fighter, but they promoted him in such a way that everyone thought he was the baddest motherfucker in history. shoot, a few months ago ufc actually fooled people into thinking royce gracie had a prayer against matt hughes, and they made a ton of money off of it.
but i got off topic again. check the fatman's post, where he mistakenly asserts that mma is a "close second" to boxing in terms of brain injuries. and he's not a dumb guy. it's just that this is just the kind of misconception that is still prevalent about mma. of course, the popularity boom is going to slowly combat that, but an unfortunate death (especially one that could have been prevented) could very well stop the sport dead for another few years.
and i don't know this to be a fact or anything, but isn't football way ahead of everything in concussions?
