I'm not a fan of UFC or whatever acronym is currently popular and I would really enjoy participating in labeling them as ghey for no other reason than it's fun. However, it is undeniable that all of them could kick my ass with one leg and two arms tied behind their backs and since it's unacceptable to admit that a ghey man can beat me up I will not label them as such.

I don't like this silly sport. I fought MUCH when younger. When I was very young, kid beat me up for ANY REASON - I've got a big mouth. But, once 18-19, no one who fought with me forgot it. I was too fucking scary. And, it hurt them too fucking much. I've broken ribs - mine and theirs. No few than five people have broken bones in their hands hitting my thick size 8 skull. In a street fight in Atlantic City in 1982, I once bit a part of a guys ear off and spit it in his face. In my last fight in 1987 I tossed an ex-girlfriend's 6'2" husband - who attempted to stab me with a butterknife for bringing up his wife-beating in public - over a booth in a "Friendly's" in upstate NY. He broke his collarbone. That brought my total to 5. It mostly stopped for me when I serverely injured 2 townie rapists when I was in college in 1983. One went into a short coma. Neither will be the same. I can go from zero to psycho-pathic in nano-seconds. Part of my bi-polar? Don't know. I have heard it homorously described as "a classic example of demonic possession". Usually it is abuse of the weak that fused my rage, especially passive women. I find this sport similar to people with guns shooting at each other JUST the damage just won't show immediately. Heard Muhammed Ali likes it, though. Or at least that's what I thought he mumbled ...  What was that, Mr. Ali?

Those aren't really valid parallels in my opinion. -First of all more often than not no one is hurt badly save for pride (Run Forest Run). -This is a competition between skilled fighters, not some drunk schmuck from the bar, or your uncles wifes, kid brothers cousin. Beating up on those that don't train, or biting some dude doesn't make you a tough guy. -Muhammed Ali spent years of standing 8 counts and pointed in the next direction only to get brain bumped some more. You obviously have no idea what your talking about.

mr. 69, you point out no deaths in mma. it's true. but eventually someone is going to die. it's an inevitability, no matter how well run the shows are. it's a violent sport, and no matter how many precautions are taken, accidents happen. what is worrisome, though, is that with the explosion in popularity of mma, more and more people are looking to cash in. this leads to more and more shows put on by more and more people who are only concerned about making a buck, and who might cut corners or even put guys in there who shouldn't be. for a sport that is just now gaining acceptance as more than simply a freakshow, this could be devastating. and of course mma is gay. all sports have some level of homoerotic undertones. two barely clothed men riding each other while an arena full of other men cheer them on is just a little more up front about it than most. it doesn't matter.

That snapshot is certainly funny. As for the inevitability of deaths sure something may happen, do something long enough you'll find it anywhere. Kids have died playing little league baseball. The fact remains that MMA is very safe, especially today. People are better training to fight, refs are better trained to watch for injuries and sign a fighter cannot defend himself. Once that happens, no standing 8 count, the fight is finished. Google boxing deaths and you can find hundreds of cases, google skiing deaths and you'll find the same. Try that with MMA which has hundreds of bouts in countless organizations all over the world. Quote:

i think you're talking about popularity. to be sure, mma is very hot right now, and it is making great strides in its public image. 60 minutes just did a piece on it. but ten years ago professional wrestling experienced a popularity boom. every kid at my school was wearing an austin 3:16 or nwo shirt. the popularity faded. of course there are many more mma gyms now. it's the cool thing to do. it's the cool thing to talk about. but that's what i'm saying is dangerous. with the boom in popularity comes the people who simply want to cash in, who just want to make a quick buck off of the new hip thing, and don't care to take the precautions necessary for the safety of the fighters. do you think if some drunk yahoo gets killed in a local toughman contest that the ufc will not be mentioned in the story? that dana white will not be forced to answer questions about it?
boxing has been part of the mainstream sports landscape for decades. ufc is a relatively recent phenomenon. how could boxing not be more accepted? you post a picture of randy couture, tito ortiz, chuck liddell, half this board has no idea who they are. these are mma's biggest stars in the united states. post a picture of oscar de la hoya, everyone will immediately recognize him. ufc is the hottest thing on ppv right now, but that just proves that ufc is doing the best job right now of convincing the people who watch to buy their shows.
