I had all but given up on understanding the meaning of "caiu a ficha" - "the penny dropped" - it's some god-damned Brazilian idiom.
It's a kind of an epiphany statement like "then it hit me!".
XPT Example:
"I couldn't figure out how that ugly talentless slut got a nomination over Mia Rose but when I saw her rubbing up on Mike Ramone the penny dropped!"
The "penny dropped" is also an english language idiom. Get some sleep fatman.
"When the penny drops, someone belatedly understands something that everyone else has long since understood."
