from santa DUC
"I had personal tragedies. My son Shamus, in his early twenties, died of leukemia just over two months ago [in New Foundland, Canada]. [Hamilton was 12-years old when he fathered the boy.] My son was a gentle spirit. He was not like his father trying to conquer the world."
DUC: "You had a son in his twenties?"
Hamilton: "Yes. That's the stunned look I get on everybody's face. Yes, I started young."
DUC: "How old were you when you...?"
Hamilton: "I'm not going to tell that story. He was the best mistake that I ever made. I'd give everything just to have him back.
"I knew about it. It does affect your work. As it was coming down, I couldn't concentrate. I told them that. You've got to get someone else to fill in for me. I've got to go take care of this. I delayed leaving. To make a long story short, due to complications, I never got that last time with my son. I spent the better part of two months up there taking care of him. I said to my company, 'Don't panic. I will be back.'
Kelly sits quietly at Hamilton's side.
Hamilton: "I came back to uphold what I'd stated I'd do.
"I'd written the contract. It had a good will clause that we weren't going to say anything terrible to each other. The person I report to starts off with, 'I thought you flaked on the contract and weren't coming back. I tried your phone. It was disconnected.'
"I was 5000 miles away. Cell phones don't work in some of the regions of New Foundland. By the time I was done with everything, I was in Labrador. It took two hours to get to a phone. I wasn't getting paid enough to float a place down here and a place up there. I had expenses taking care of funeral arrangements. I told them I might not be able to be reached.
"The people were saying I'd flaked. If you ask me, that breaches the good will nature of the contract. Considering I was the one who wrote the contract, I'm probably the one who can interpret it the best."
Hamilton apologizes to his meek wife.
