My old lab partner just got her PhD based on research into HIV. Unfortunately in Australia there is not much money for scientists compared to the USA - I remember being shown videos of some US scientists as part of the course and they had expensive cars and big flashy boats - I don't remember why they showed all this in the video but I remember feeling a bit disgusted thinking that this must be where a lot of donations from the general public go. I'm sure the majority of scientists are not like this however
