FREEP might have been wrong, but those median incomes are still falling as evidenced in this updated map.

MEDIAN INCOME UPDATE....A few days ago I posted a map from the Detroit Free Press showing that median household incomes had dropped in nearly every state between 1999 and 2005. Via Asymmetrical Information, I see that the Freep screwed up: they used a different measure for the 1999 figures than for the 2005 numbers, and that made the decline look worse than it was.

Census figures are here, and while they aren't perfect, they do use the same methodology over time. This doesn't change the main conclusion of the original post, namely that median incomes have dropped even though the economy has been growing, but the drop wasn't quite as bad as it looked. The census figures are below.

I'll say one thing, though: those boys down in Texas sure did a whole lot better under Clinton than they have under Bush. If they were smart, they would have voted for Gore and kept the Shrub under wraps in Austin, where he couldn't have done so much damage to their economy.

and i posted the same chart showing the revised numbers when i found it...you are late silly fuck!

Things look pretty grim for those red states even with the revised numbers! That is why the Repugs align themselves so tightly with the Religous Right...to keep those bible belters voting Repuglicon even tho it is clearly not in their interests.

This whole debate is bullshit...

The only variable that should be taken into account is the income of college graduates, not some schlep that dropped out and is flipping burgers.

I say this because I saw this totally fucked up report that this year's crop of college grads could expect a starting salary around $50K a year. Why is that fucked up??? Because back when I graduated college in the stone age, my first 'white collar' job paid what the guy sprinkling chemlawn at my house gets paid today - far below that college newbies are getting. Plus, I don't know a single person where I live in SoCal who doesn't easily make double what the chart says.

most political debates on here are bullshit...

The median income is taking into consideration those with college degrees. Glad to hear you and yours are doing well. I am doing well as well but it does concern me that there is an overall group, the middle class that this country is supposedly built upon, that is not doing as well as it was or could be. This was what your old favorite Ronnie Reagan used as a campaign line..."are you doing better than you were four years ago?" now that this doesnt apply to your self appointed spiritual sucksessor your type disavows this position.

oh yeah check this out!

First US lawmaker to admit guilt in corruption case

By James Vicini

WASHINGTON, Sept 15 (Reuters) - A Republican congressman agreed to plead guilty to illegally accepting tens of thousands of dollars in trips, meals, drinks and tickets to become the first U.S. lawmaker convicted in the Jack Abramoff political corruption scandal, U.S. officials said on Friday.

The plea deal represented a sharp reversal for Ohio Rep. Bob Ney, who had denied any wrongdoing. He was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1994 and abandoned his race for re-election last month as the federal investigation intensified into his links to the convicted lobbyist Abramoff.

The Abramoff scandal and other corruption cases have hurt Republicans as they seek to keep control of the U.S. Congress in the November elections. Abramoff, a former top Washington lobbyist, had close ties to congressional leaders, especially Republicans.

"Congressman Ney admits that he corruptly solicited and accepted a stream of benefits valued at tens of thousands of dollars in exchange for agreeing to perform and performing a series of official acts," Assistant Attorney General Alice Fisher said.

"He also admitted deceiving the public and the U.S. House of Representatives about his actions," she said.

According to the plea deal, U.S. Justice Department prosecutors will recommend the 52-year-old Ney be given a 27-month prison sentence. He faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.

U.S. District Judge Ellen Segal Huvellle scheduled an Oct. 13 hearing for Ney to enter his guilty plea to the charges of conspiracy to commit fraud and other offenses and to lying. Continued...
