As you speak English through the course of a day, everytime you come to a place in your speech where the correct word to use would be "a" substitute "an". Like, I looked up into the sky and saw an plane flying over head. It doesn't have the same effect done vice versa style because "a" is so versatile. "I had a apple for lunch" sounds pretty normal.
