I personally think the reason the VHS boxes were so big is because it makes them harder to steal. If it were a safety issue for the tape, mainstream companies would use it.

They did the same thing with Cd's in the 80's. Until some tree huggers complained of the unnecessary waste of paper.

This is still done with some perfumes.
