Sumner Redstone, CEO of Paramount owner Viacom (Charts), said Cruise's controversial behavior over the last year - including advocating for Scientology and denouncing the use of antidepressant drugs - was the cause for the move, according to the Wall Street Journal. The company is concerned that Cruise's behavior hurt his most recent film, "Mission: Impossible 3," said the report. Cruise has worked with Paramount on hit films such as "Mission: Impossible," "Top Gun" and "Days of Thunder." Yeeeeee haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaw!

On TV recently they were saying that the days of lead actors getting $40 million etc are disappearing as big name actors no longer guarantee box office success. Today's audiences seem to be more about the movie than its stars and movies with no name casts are just as likely to be hits

I think this parting of the ways is down to a number of things: 1) Big salary, star-driven movies are one the way out...concept is now king again. 2)Cruise ain't getting any younger 3)Scientology bullshit, like threatening not to promote MI:3 because of that South Park episode. 4)MI:3 bombed partly due to negative publicity surrounding Cruise's reaction to the South Park episode, his wacky plans for the birth of his child, and his outburst on antidepressants. He was becoming a bigger liability by the day, and I think they've done a smart thing in cutting him off.

Even that hot Asian chick couldn't persuade me to go see MI:3. Speaking of Scientologists, I remember my first trip to LA...I think there are like 3 Scientology buildings (at least) on Hollywood Blvd., plus a bunch of folks handing out leaflets to their 'exhibition'. It near scared the shit out of me...
