From correspondents in Los Angeles August 17, 2006 08:51am NICOLE Kidman has made a public stand against terrorism. The actress, joined by 84 other high-profile Hollywood stars, directors, studio bosses and media moguls, has taken out a powerfully-worded full page advertisement in today's Los Angeles Times newspaper. It specifically targets "terrorist organisations" such as Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Palestine. "We the undersigned are pained and devastated by the civilian casualties in Israel and Lebanon caused by terrorist actions initiated by terrorist organisations such as Hezbollah and Hamas," the ad reads. "If we do not succeed in stopping terrorism around the world, chaos will rule and innocent people will continue to die. "We need to support democratic societies and stop terrorism at all costs." A who's who of Hollywood heavyweights joined Kidman on the ad. The actors listed included: Michael Douglas, Dennis Hopper, Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis, Danny De Vito, Don Johnson, James Woods, Kelly Preston, Patricia Heaton and William Hurt. Directors Ridley Scott, Tony Scott, Michael Mann, Dick Donner and Sam Raimi also signed their names. Other Hollywood powerplayers supporting the ad included Sumner Redstone, the chairman and majority owner of Paramount Pictures, and billionaire mogul, Haim Saban. LINK Could this be true? I'm speechless. Hollywood actors actually placing the blame where it belongs, on the terrorists. I still won't believe it until I have it in print in my hands. There must be some veiled jab at Bush, the US government or Israel in the article somewhere.

That's great...only Hamas and Hizbollah are democratically elected. (Hamas to a much greater extent than Hizbollah).
Seems to me that they're saying democracy is great, unless we don't like who you voted for and what they stand for.
I'm sorry, but when was it established that the Hollywood community comprises the brightest intellects on the planet?
What next...will we be consulting Gary Coleman and David Hasselhoff on how to turn around America's national debt? The mind boggles...
PS: Did Mel Gibson sign it?

I do not believe that Hezbollah was democratically elected. In fact, when the current government of Lebanon ran, it's platform included a call for all militia groups to disarm. After the election, the gov't called for disarmament and all other groups went along. Hezbollah told them to get fucked. The Lebanese gov't has been AFRAID to go into the Hezbollah controlled areas for years.
That being said, I agree with you that the concept of liking democracy until the people elect someone you don't like is out there - unfortuantely, that's the tacit position of the US president and his band of idiots.
People with a broader view know that democracy before people are ready for it is just mob-rule.

Yep...Hizbollah only have democratically elected representatives in the Lebanese parliament/congress...they are NOT the Lebanese Government. Hamas, on the other hand, ARE the democratically elected Government of Palestine (if Palestine is even recognised as a proper nation at this time). It will be interesting to see whether the recent spat in the Middle East has strengthened Hizbollah's position or weakened it...

Not an entirely bad list! However, if someone in Hollywood circulated a full page ad denouncing the United States as a "terrorist nation" or demanding the impeachment and execution of George W. Bush, how many more signatures would it have? How about a full-page ad demanding America ratify the Kyoto protocol? Save the whales?
I don't think terrorists are all that unpopular amongst rich WHite liberals like those in Hollywood. Keep in mind most of these people were young in the 1970's during the "radical chic" era when people like Angela Davis were heroes.
Also:
Why wasn't Al Qaeda included on their condemnation list? Maybe it's because Hamas and Hexbollah are primarily enemies of Israel while Al Qaeda concentrates terrorism on "The Great Satan" and it's "imperialist war-monger" President Bush?

i'm not sure exactly what you're hitting at . . .
I suppose what I meant was that the ingredients involved in creating the Nazi war machine are presenting themselves in the Middle East: nascent "democracies", perceptions of humiliation, unbridled bigotry along ethnic and racial lines, and a warlike people with historical bloodlust.
I'm not illustrating anything new or proposing a solution, but what I see in Ahmadinejad's holocaust denials is a way to convince his populace that a "democratic" nation in modern times wouldn't or couldn't carry out an ethnic cleansing on that scale. The rank and file German people were largely unaware of the "final solution", and it's mechanism benefited from that ignorance.
I consider how long it has taken racism to simmer down in the United States, a nation that legislated itself out of complacency and took an active role in it's own betterment. In the Middle East, that same type of hatred is clearly being fed and cultivated. There is a tipping point out there in the ether somewhere, how many moderates are there within those regimes that might pull it back from the brink?
My point is that from a historical perspective, I see the same mechanisms in action. It's all a part of humanity's progression of course, the question is how many people are going to die for it in the next generation.
10 years, we had only one decade of "peace" between the Soviet Union falling and the Twin Towers falling. It's a shame. By all means, anyone feel free to hit me back.

You can't civilize an animal, you can train it to do certain things but it is still an animal. When the governments of the world realize this point about terrorists perhaps we can actually work together to solve the problem in a lasting way. The civilized world is pissing in the wind thinking that it can use their methods and rules against such demons.
