They're a lot of things -- evil, demented, psychotic, etc. -- but they're not spineless or cowardly. Regardless of how nuts their convictions are, they're willing to die for them. That takes a great deal of spine.
Being brainwashed then killing innocent women and children by committing suicide is both spineless and cowardly IMO.
