I was there in '88 and '89. In '93 there was a blowup on the peninsula that was never fully reported by the media. It was actually pretty serious and people I knew at 8th Army HQ told me that US and ROK alert status was raised to the highest level since the axe murders on the DMZ in '76 and we were only a few hours away from Korean War II. At that time I wouldn't be surprised if the embassy Marines had their rules of engagement altered. Never heard about the incident at the embassy though.
