I read 'Silas Marner' in junior high. Had the teacher not informed us prior that George was a woman, the relationship between Eppie and Silas would've given me nightmares and flashback traumas. But really I don't read that much. Descriptive passages are beyond me. I get frustrated when rooms or landscapes are described. Or when Wolfe describes clothing in minute detail. I cannot picture that sort of thing in my mind. And all the voices of the characters sound like the computer from '2001' in my head. If I read at all it is interior monologue ranting by an unreliable first person narrator like in 'Lolita'. That I can grasp.
