do you have any sense of real numbers? why don't you try to come up with your figure of a little over ten billion for the american film industry? you won't, the numbers are easy to find and they ain't ten billion.
i think you'll find porn roughly equivalent to the indoor water-park industry in size.
i'll never cease to be amazed that the american public is afflicted with such innumeracy that a story like that seems credible.

The easy jab is to blame the sorry state of education but that doesnt fly here...
This has been an "affliction" since the mid 1980s, and we can thank the economic/financial "trauma" reported in the media regarding Junk Bonds-Milken, Charles Keating & the S&Ls...and Bruce McNall bankrupting himself and 17 other investors to get Wayne Gretzky to play hockey in a city where the temperature rarely dips below 60 even in the heart of winter.
What do I mean? The public is shellshocked when it comes to media reporting of anything economic or financial, especially figures. Since those traumatic events people have been either extremely reluctant or extremely eager to believe whatever suits their fancy or ill-suited grasp of math and/or reality. Porn is exceeded in wild fantasmical accounting illusions only by Drugs, the war on such and the apparent societal costs of both...

Listening to Lu-e and others debate this non-topic is both fun and nauseating. Like Kami trying to open a checking account, porn and finance do not mix.
Ben is the type of moron who thinks Club Jenna sold for $35MM even though PLA just announced a restructuring that will kill its earnings for the whole year. The best overstatement of the sex business was the guy in the early '80s who claimed child porn was a $50B industry involving 10 million children annually, then was told by a consultant he hired that the douchebag had overstates his case by a hundred fold or so.
But can you blame them? This is the business where more A/R is collected with a baseball bat than a trade discount, where check bouncing and kiting is common (you think anyone in Porn Valley knows what a controlled disbursement account is?), and the local currency among the whores is a monetary unit called the "Gucci."

I think you'll find that Ben is neither American nor competent to live outside of a guardians care.
Americans believe such contrivances because they are made to believe them. It's easier for the US gov't. to act, in an otherwise deplorable manner, on things like drugs or pornography if there is public consensus that these are huge terrible monsters that need to be stopped.

One of the most lucid, straightforward, concise statements on WHY things are the way they are. Hav2 is like Alonzo from "Training Day" with his shotgun..."Surgical with that Motherfucker"

I could write a small paper on this very topic...one of the "uncomfortable" truths of the scene...a number of things substitute for cash in the "Tit for Tat....or...TIT.... or TWAT" aspect of many porn starlets' lives/careers. The most OBVIOUS being drugs/pills. Soooo many anecdotal accounts of this very phenomena, as well as a couple first hand experiences, drove this point home to me over the last several months. Gucci bags no doubt figure in it somewhere, but BLOWJOBS dispensed by pornchicks for all manner of goods and services is what impressed me the most. BJs are better than Traveler's Checques in Porn Valley for many girls...
Exchange rate/table for San Fernando Valley:
$100 = 1/2 Gucci Black T-shirt (retail) = .167 Gucci Classic Handbag (retail) = 15 Vicodin ES = 20 Xanax (1 mg) = 1 Full BJ w/swallow if you are not fat & ugly, No swallow if you Are Fat & ugly = 1/2 of a 10 minute Doggie Style/No Face to Face Contact Fuck
*note* Gucci Items, of course can be had for Much less via wholesale or Online outlets like Stylesell.com, but hey, who's gonna admit to that amongst these chicks?

$70 billion is a bullshit made-up number, impossible to quantify or disprove. According the CIA world factbook (perhaps not up completely up to date, but good enough). The entire GDP of virtually every African country is less than $70B - it's just not possible that pornography generates more $$$, unless you count the spin off industries like kleenex and crystal meth labs . Oh, and Burg, as far as saying: Quote:

I'd like to see you try!
