New York (dpa) - The United States is sending satellite and laser- guided bombs to Israel for use in the air assault against the Lebanese Hezbollah movement, the New York Times said Saturday, quoting "American officials".

The shipment has not been announced publically and the weapons are part of a multi-million arms package approved last year. Military officials quoted by the Times said the Israeli requested for the weapons was "unsual" and indicated that Israel still has a "long list of targets in Lebanon to strike."

An Israel army spokeswoman refused to relate directly to the Times report, saying that Israel did not provide details of the weapons in its arsenal.

Israel began its air campaign against Lebanon on July 12, hours after Hezbollah launched a cross-border raid which saw eight Israeli soldiers killed and two abducted.

By Saturday morning, the Israelis had hit over 1800 targets north of the border, an Israeli army spokesman said.

Hezbollah, for its part, has countered the Israeli offensive by firing hundreds of rockets across the border, hitting cities in northern Israel, as well as locations further south which had previously not been targets of the Iranian-backed group.
