I thought once they got their independance in 1999 they'd be ok. Sad and moving photographs here with deep empathy for the people of E. Timor. Beautiful work by Norman Ng.

The Indonesians absolutely brutalized these people, as well as many of the other unique populations within their boundaries. A Marine friend of mine was sent into East Timor during '99 as a "peacekeeper" on the U.N. mandate, I believe. He told of the Indonesian army appropriating all of the local fire tankers, loading the tanks with gasoline and driving around the cities dousing and lighting anything and everything. Bodies were everywhere, and the citizens domestic hogs would gorge on them by the roadside. The people of course wouldn't touch the pigs after that. I would expect that the Timorese must be suffering from mass PTSD, a wrecked economy and the Indonesians still taking a shit on them whenever they can. Australia is doing what they can to assist, but this only further drives a wedge between them and the Indonesians, who prefer to spend their time suppressing the press and free speech, subjugating populations that don't embrace the corrupt government by forced relocation and warfare, commuting prison sentences for religious zealots who advocate bombing bars full of Australians, executing or jailing for life Australians who are found guilty of drug smuggling in courts that have never found a single defendant innocent, and other shit like this. My point here being, Indonesia sucks. While East Timor now has it's freedom, they've got nothing with which to get their feet on the ground, but plenty of machetes.

Yes, the Suharto government brutalized most of indonesia. Yet our government didn't have any problem with him. I guess we pick and choose which dictators to compare to hitler on any given day.
I love it how someone always finds a way to lay some blame on the US.
Not the US this time, but Australia. Australia is clearly in the blame.

I think over 2000 Australian troops have been sent into East Timor
yeah from what I heard late on response (as usual) and light on proper deployment, in other words parading around whilst a lot of shit went down, gangs, looting etc. If we had say economic interest there, or strategic ones, sure maybe Australia's response would be quicker and more effective.
This is a good thread.

Third-worlders, Eurotrash, and Left-wingers in general are very predictable in this regard. It works as follows:
Case 1: The United States intervenes. They proceed to scream about how it is really an act of imperialism to steal resources, establish a military presence or base, or generally push around a bunch of brown-skinned people.
Case 2: The United States doesn't intervene. Then they scream about how the government doesn't care because the people aren't White (ie. Rwanda or Sudan) or because they lack resources that evil "Amerikkka" can't steal.
For these reasons, I am completely apathetic to the suffering of non-Americans. Helping is lose-lose.

Honesty. America aint a player in third world power shifting anymore. China and Russia are, at least they would be honest about invading countries. Not hock some bullshit they are out to topple dictators and saving the world. If China runs thin on oil, and they will, and US does something utterly stupid in Iran...jeez...we are fucked. But Iran are playing it out, and they have the upper hand
The world is changing. It will be interesting to see how the cards are drawn.

Australia didn't want to intervene until the Indonesian government had made a formal request. The Indonesian government were going to try and quell the uprising themselves

Symptoms of marasmus (starvation) include Abdominal manifestations - Distension, decreased or metallic bowel sounds,etc...
I think the reason is that the abdomen area gets so weak their guts are basically falling out, and the skin is barely holdin it in.

As I understand it, people suffering from marasmus tend to drink large quantities of water to quell hunger pain. Large quantities of water stimulate the stretch receptors of the stomach and causes significant distention.
