I just finished Mike Carey's Lucifer, from the Sandman series. The last issue comes out next mth. Very good character, religious and contemporary issues addressed. A good read.

Check out a comic called American Way, on Wildstorm. Based in the 60's, about the US government staging superheroes battles etc, keep the masses preoccupied.
